ABC moves from WPLG to WSVN in Miami

Why would you go from 10.1 to 7.2?
Because in the land of digital television, cable, satellite and streaming services, it really doesn't matter as much where you are physically located.

But this is a pretty surprising development. WPLG was always considered one of ABC's stronger affiliates.

This is an interesting quote from WPLG:

The programming we get from ABC is no longer the same as it has been in years past. Exclusivity, which is the core to our relationship, is disappearing. Even when ABC airs high quality programming, like the Oscars, ABC airs that same programming on other platforms. We no longer feel we are getting what we pay for.

They're obviously talking about Hulu and streaming options.

Our job is to serve this community with news and local programming, that’s why we have an FCC license. If we agreed to the ABC terms, that mission would have suffered,” added Medina.

“The network television model has changed dramatically in recent years and it is declining more and more each year. The programming we get from ABC is no longer the same as it has been in years past. Exclusivity, which is the core to our relationship, is disappearing. Even when ABC airs high quality programming, like the Oscars, ABC airs that same programming on other platforms. We no longer feel we are getting what we pay for.
“Instead of sending our money to New York, we will keep it in our community and use that money to finance a massive expansion in local news and other local programming,” Medina continued.

“We are Local 10. Local is in our name. A majority of our staff grew up here. We are excited for the future of Local 10. Just watch us. We are about to serve this community in an even bigger and better way,” Medina concluded.

Thats interesting but I get it its a shifting media landscape here. Interesting how this plays out when WPLG is independent. All we have to do is look at WHDH-TV Boston when they lost their NBC Affiliation to Comcast's WBTS-TV because of the very same exact reasons here.

They're not wrong. All you see on network television is promotion for companion streaming platforms like Hulu and Paramount Plus. I assume that the local affiliates do not participate in the revenue generated by these platforms and also lose out on local advertising that spends on streaming over local broadcast.

How many top 30 TV markets have one of the big 4 OTA networks on an .2? I know it happens in small markets.
Very Rare and Sacramento TV Market came close to having that situation when KMAX lost their CW affiliation in 2023 and Nexstar owned KTXL-TV Sacramento was speculated to get the CW affiliation on 40.2 while Fox Programming is on 40.1. The Conventional wisdom at that time was Nexstar is going to move CW affiliations to their owned and operated affiliates which included stations like KRON San Francisco and WPHL Philadelphia in that deal. That was until Hearst Television Step in and got KQCA-TV the CW affiliation in a last minute move.

Correct. The concern is that the network can bypass local affiliates and market directly to the viewers. Of course ABC owns a lot of its major market affiliates, so they're in effect competing with themselves.

What's funny is that WHDH uses a similar logo to WSVN and is owned by the same company. Did remorse figure in to the quick ABC affiliation on the second channel?

It'd be really funny if down the road (Doubt it'd happen considering how iconic their logo is) if Sunbeam decides to ditch their Circle 7 for the one many ABC stations use which we've seen other markets (ie Washington, DC) done in the past.

I smell a sale of WPLG coming once ownership caps are loosened. Might be a duopoly target. Does Berkshire-Hathaway really have any interest in keeping it?
Warren Buffett's investment lost a metric ton of value overnight. He might as well eat the loss and sell WPLG to Mission Broadcasting (so Nexstar can operate it) and it can join The CW.

What remorse would that be? WHDH appears to be managing OK without NBC. NBC's demands were clearly not palatable for Sunbeam in Boston. They also turned down very significant offers to sell the station but didn't...for better or worse.

Miami is different. Sunbeam already has a strong news presence on 7.1, which they can leverage on the new ABC feed. Let's be honest...ABC isn't in the strongest position. There aren't any other full power English language stations other than WSFL, which is owned by Scripps, but has no news department. The rest are either Spanish language, religious or network O&Os. Sunbeam can make this work.

Well I'm taking something from a post on this subject without realizing there is one but I thought this was an interesting topic here:

Scripps, Tegna, and Nexstar are making "profits" while making "budget cuts".

WTVF in Nashville where I live still hasn't found a permanent replacement for Bree Smith on the weekday evening newscasts as they still rotate their weekend meteorologists (Henry Rothenberg and Katie Melvin). Yet they still pay for that affiliation because Scripps tells them to. On the one hand this feels unusual and unprecedented. But when you have Berkshire-Hathaway as the owner you can actually dictate terms as oppose the other way around.

In Boston, NBC ended up on a low-power station, but calls itself "NBC 10". It's silly, as Providence, RI next door has an actual NBC channel 10 (WJAR-TV).

Westinghouse caused a swap of CBS and NBC there (Boston) in 1995. CBS moved from 7 to 4 and vice versa.

There's nothing "low power" about NBC in Boston other than the -LD at the end of the calling.

It channel-shares with WGBX, which is as big a DTV full-power signal as anyone else in the market, with the same power and antenna location as CBS (WBZ) and ABC (WCVB).

It has full market cable, satellite and streaming coverage across the market, and in the Canadian markets that get WBZ and WCVB.

At least 90 percent of its viewers turn to "channel 10" to see it. Why wouldn't it brand as "NBC 10"?

Yes, the situation causes a smidge of confusion, but only at the very southern end of the Boston market, and only for the small fraction of viewers in that area who use OTA reception.

It's been over eight years now. Everyone's pretty much figured it out.

As they will in Miami.

WSVN will keep their current logo given that they are a primary Fox Affiliate in the market. ABC Miami would be something WSVN would run with once they get the affiliation. But I doubt they would use the version used on Disney owned ABC affiliates like KABC-TV and KGO-TV for obvious reasons.
