And most of his report delt with the Hanna Banana concert being held in Rochester. Who the hell is Hanna Montana anyways? And what parent in their right mind would have their child out in this weather just to hear some teenie-bopper sing songs? People drove from Oswego and further for this concert as authorities are warning motorists to stay off the roads because of the cold and blizzard conditions. What a world!

You OBVIOUSLY don't have kids in the "Hannah Montana" age group. NEVER underestimate the power of a whiney 13-year-old.

I'm still waiting for this so-called Big Storm to arrive. ::) You'd think between all the weather weenies that someone could've called off the hounds. Oh no, instead, we're making a mad dash to Wegmans, heading to the malls 'cuz God forbid we don't grab that Christmas present before armageddon hits, and the topper, reporting live at Hannah Bannana to see how all the tweens are holding up in the cold. We're live, local and up to no good out in the snow reporting on something that happens every year. You wanna be "on my side"? Give me a responsible forcast without all the hype and stop telling me to keep an eye on my dog and check in with my 90 yr old neighbor. DUH! This is Western NY people and I've got a big tip for ya....come closer....a little closer....IT SNOWS HERE!!!

I agree with how some of the reporting is going. The news is acting like its the first time it has snowed in years. It hasn't been a year since some people looked out their windows and saw eight feet of snow. Just because some places didn't get much snow last winter doesn't mean it's never going to snow again.

And Hanna Montana is nothing more than the next tabloid queen. In a few years the news will be talking about her antics non-stopand supermarket tabloids will try to be clever with covers like "Her Achy Breaky Heart: Star Arrested!!!" in reference to her famous washed-up father. You know the one, the guy with the mullet. She'll eventually find herself checking into rehab along with fellow Disney products like Britney, Christina, Lindsay, and Hillary.

Amen. Brother. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Now, regarding the ABC live hits from Rochester, the first of which I saw Sunday Night. Does anyone have a guess as to where the guy was doing his live hit standup that night? I tried like heck to figure it out, but I couldn't. The building in the background almost looked like the Ferry Terminal but I'm not sure.
By the way, the guy referred to Rochester as being in "new England",..so he lost me right there.

This entire non-blizzard was a complete embarassment. 13 did a 5 to 6 pm special! When you get the forecast wrong, admit it, pull back, and move on. Don't pretend it's Armeggedon still. Lonsberry is talking about it right now. There's a huge backlash among viewers.

Every station I watched (8, 10, 13, and R News) had different snow-fall amounts, and temperatures. All this hype about double-triple Doppler Radar and seven-day forecasts would be amusing if it wasn't for the fact that these people have no idea what the weather is going to do 12 hours in advance let alone 2 days.
This "Sky-is-Falling" mentality, along with crawl screens and bells and whistles, just ruins the already questionable credibility of these so-called weather operations.

I guess it's not just the complete paranoia that these weather bums cause that irritates me, but also the stories that everyone seems to regurgitate every single year that kills me.

"How are emergency workers dealing with the weather?" - OH MY GOD! You mean police, fire and ambulance workers have to work in this weather?? Whoa, hold the phones and call in the National Guard!! ::)

"Rural Metro says don't put your hand in a snowblower or else you'll chop your hand off." - DUH! Like I need some talking head to tell me to use common sense. Puh-leez. I particularly love the stories that have lists attached to them, "tips" I believe is what the reporter calls them. Me? I call it "News for the stupid." If you haven't figured out how to drive in the snow, here's a tip...MOVE!

"How are the homeless dealing with the cold?" - Ummmm, they're cold and they're probably looking for someplace warm. Thanks for that. Next.

"I'm standing here live on 490 at 390 and traffic is moving slowly." - Yeah, that's because it's snowing and no one wants to get in an accident. Go shine that lightstand somewhere else or you'll be causing an accident!!

I suppose that it's the same in every media market, but c'mon, mix it up a bit. Reporters have become lazy and it's always the same stuff, like going to the shelter on Thanksgiving or following people who have to work on Christmas. Summer's no different. "Water the elderly and check on your pets." "Rochester's 'hot' jobs". "Let's fry and egg on the blacktop".

Anyway, enough of my rant. Whew, that was cathartic. I feel much better. I think I'm going to go out and look for pets that have been left outside in the cold while driving around in my newly "winterized" car. ;)

Stay warm everyone!! :p

What are you, a communist?

It's rock and roll, bub. Pop music. Celebrity. There were people from out of state at that concert. And the roads weren't that bad. I drove through my share of snow storms worse than that to get to a concert. Boy, I bet you'd be a mean parent. Mean, mean, mean. I bet you think the Beatles were a product of Satan, too. And Elvis.

Sure, all those celebrities pass. That's the fickle crowd.

BTW, Monday morning Champion was at the corner of Main & South -- in front of the Hyatt. I wonder if that's where he was Sunday night.

As for storm coverage -- shameful. Tremendously overdone. Consider this: I bet some sales manager at 13 smelled blood, and their special was a way to cram in extra holiday spots on an already sold-out schedule. It was better than the old "makegood theatre" primetime movie special.

GM's are sheep. So are ND's. Because their bosses see other stations pulling out all the stops, they feel they have to. They're afraid to tell their consultants that "maybe you live in Iowa or Texas, but we live in a snow belt. This happens all the time.

Consider the Funke tease from Friday night at 10:30: "A potentially devastating blizzard coming our way".

Devastating? Like Katrina? Like the '91 ice storm? Tell me, how devastating was the '93 blizzard? Or the '99 one? Crippling, maybe. A bummer, yea. But devastating??!!

You complain about teenyboppers whining to see another teenybopper in concert, in a snowstorm? How about the teenyboppers writing the crap that passes for news copy in this town?

Yea, all the stories were the same old, same old. NONE were any different. NONE NONE NONE!!!!! I turn on my TV and laugh.

Yes I believe everyone should have nothing.

Boy, I bet you'd be a mean parent. Mean, mean, mean. I bet you think the Beatles were a product of Satan, too. And Elvis.
I never liked Ringo; and who is Elvis ?

You guys are too much... :D I agree that coverage and anticipation of this event was well overblown. Then again, everyone thought that it would be much worse than it actually was, so you can't necessarily point the finger to one station or media outlet. I always get a kick out of these TV news crews that show up at Wegmans. Every single time there is a storm they are there. It's like Wegmans is the ONLY grocery store in town that deserves free publicity. Of course I may be a bit biased because I work for an independent grocery store, which happened to have their 2nd best day in the company's 20 year history on Saturday. Nobody would report that though.

My particular annoyance this time out was with the closing crawls on 8, which didn't really need to be running non-stop over CBS Sunday Morning, did they? It would also be nice to see some kind of "kill time" common sense applied to the closings list - I'm pretty sure the Dresden United Methodist Church (which isn't even in the Rochester DMA!) had long since concluded any scheduled activities for the day by the time the 6 PM show came on - as had most of the closings that were still rotating through the list by then.

Actually, that's really a secondary annoyance. My BIG annoyance was the idiot heading eastbound on Monroe near Jeremiah's a few minutes before 7:00 Sunday morning, as I was heading westbound on my way into WXXI for storm coverage. Not only did this jerk think he could pass a snowplow also heading east, he never even stopped after knocking my mirror off and sending me flying into a line of parked cars, which in turn knocked my bumper off, shattered a hubcap and killed my suspension. And since I can't prove who was responsible, guess who gets to pay the $500 deductible?

At least I wasn't hurt - if this guy had been a few inches further over, he'd have hit me head-on.

Mr. Allen I'm glad you work at an independent grocery store. I don't care how fantastic Wegmans might be but if more people saw the reports and videos of how Wegmans' gets their eggs in their own run egg farms nobody would buy eggs there ever again...

My gosh thank goodness you're all right! Probably some hungover teenager in a rush because they didn't make midnight curfew or something in order to go see Hanna Montana. A couple weeks ago I posted my past winter driving troubles, which I'll copy paste here:

Driving in wintery conditions can be killer. One time when I was in 9th grade and living in Albany I had my go to my annual eye exam and my mom picked me up from school. We came to a very icy red light intersection and her minivan slide slighty into the intersection before we finally were able to stop, as did the car beside us. But for what ever reason at soon as the opposing side turned green some fool who wasn't paying ANY attention hit us--and he came from the right on a one-way!

Then one time we were driving from Buffalo to Jamestown we witnessed a semi jackknifing due to the poor conditions.

During last winter's snow I was dropping a friend off at his house in Henrietta while we were getting out of my car a VW Bus came flying down street we started to have black ice on it, lost control, and hit a parked Geo Metro, causing the Geo Metro to crumple up.

I'll tell you why TV crews are always at Wegmans -- they're usually the only supermarket that allows TV news crews to be on their property. Even though "anyone" can shop at a supermarket, they're technically private property. Most will not allow TV news crews to do live hits on their property. I don't know if they're all paranoid that the cameras are going to uncover some big scandal -- even when it's obvious the crews aren't even necessarily looking to step foot inside the actual store. You'd think all these chains would welcome what's essentially FREE publicity, but they don't. Price Chopper almost always says no. Wal-Mart is among the worst. The ONLY time TV news cameras get inside a Wal-Mart store is for the grand opening, and never again. And I can't even remember the last time I saw a news crew doing a story at a Tops or P&C.

If accessibility is not THE reason, perhaps it's just something as simple as Wegmans being closest to the station, or the easiest one to beam a live hit from. If your independent store is open to having TV crews shoot packages or do live hits there, your management should inform the stations. Any reasonable reporter, assignment editor or news director would LOVE to have a "new" option so they're not always in the same predictable place every time.

Some of the newer, more advanced closings systems do have options where closings are automatically cleared out at certain times (for example, anything entered before 9am automatically gets deleted at noon) but many stations that jumped on closings software as soon as it came out are probably stuck with their older, more "manual" systems until whenever management finally decides to upgrade.

It should also be noted that many stations have a skeleton crew on weekends. Where there might be 3 or 4 producers, assignment desk help and other support staff on a weekday, it's usually just a lone producer and the on-air talent on the weekend. These folks are lucky they've got time to still get a show on the air while getting constant calls to ADD closings, let alone stopping to go through the list to weed out older closings. You might say "if the storm's going to be that big, just bring in more people." I'm sure that's not a problem at well-performing stations like WHAM, but I wouldn't be surprised if WROC had a sign on the newsroom wall stating "you've got a better chance of seeing God than getting overtime here."

Of course, even with the most basic on-air closings systems, this could be largely avoided if stations would put their foot down more often when it comes to deciding who "qualifies" to get their closings listed on the air. Do we need to list 300 different churches? If it's snowing THAT badly, I'm sure God would understand and forgive you for missing Church for one week, on your own, without having to be told Church is having a snow day. OK, so I might be a little harsh there. But seriously, do we need to be listing closings for dance schools, scout troop meetings, hair salons, dog groomers, doctor's offices, massage spas and other such places? How many customers can these places possibly have scheduled in one day? Just call these people directly and tell them you're closed!! (In the end, it's probably just as many phone calls as it takes to notify each TV & radio station!)

The airwaves should be reserved strictly for closings that truly affect great numbers of people. Schools. Major shopping malls. Major employers. Beyond that, it becomes a list of small businesses looking for free plugs by getting their name on the crawl... and then it takes that much longer for the list to cycle around again to the closings that are actually important. But sadly, stations are too afraid of "offending" small groups or businesses by refusing their closings (and losing those viewers to a competitor who WILL accept the closing)... or looking like they're "out of touch" by not having as many closings as the other stations.

It was on Mount Hope at the Ford St. bridge. Our photog drove past them on his way back to the station, but they were gone when I went by.

And I believe his piece was Northeast weather in general, which is why he mentioned New England. I watched it too and don't recall him saying Rochester was in New England.

Ah snowstorms; I can still remember what it was like coming to work at 4am in the morning getting ready for morning drive news.

I will never forget the phones ringing off the hook with cancellations. Most of them were school or business closings, but I remember this one person calling and insisting
that I announce a bingo game for that night was cancelled.

Anyone who knows me knows that at times my warped sense of humor kicks in and I replied to this person on the other end of the phone "don't you think that only an idiot would go out in this storm just to play bingo?" Of course the person was offended, but I was being honest.

TV and radio stations are performing a public service by announcing cancellations but I agree that it's a waste of time to announce that Joe's Pizza Parlor is open extra hours to serve the public during a winter storm. My reply is; who cares? And second, buy some commercial time instead of looking for a freebee.

In conclusion I think what is worse than blowing and drifting snow are those motorists who drive like maniacs. Not to pick on people with four-wheel drive vehicles, because I happen to own one, but four-wheel drive isn't going to do squat if you hit a patch of ice, or visibility is so bad you can't see two feet in front of you. As I wrote to Fybush, he's lucky to have escaped serious injuries. A car can be repaired; sometimes a person can not.

Wal-Mart may be among the worst when it comes to not allowing TV crews inside to tape stories but by far the worst chain could very well be the department store chain Kohls. How picky is Kohls? Last summer a buddy of mine filmed one of those classic car shows that took place in the parking lot of one of our local shopping centers. A video he made himself. He put it on You Tube onto to have the clip taken down "at the request of Kohls" even though a Kohls store was seen in the distance for only 20 seconds in the 5 minute clip. And Kohls wasn't even in the same shopping center where the car show too place.
