ABC-News-Now?

Over the past 14months, I have ABCNewsNow here in
Southern Cal on AT&T Uverse. I guess gradually since
the passing of Peter Jennings the channel has dropped
much of its live anchored Special events coverage. Now
mostly pop culture-and-fluff. In 2008 they ran several
hours each night of both Political Conventions, but in
ABC's press release, this year, not even a mention of
ABCNewsNow. Even the web-site seems broken-and-no
mention on an ABC homepage. I had been wondering if
they were going to replace this channel with an ABC
Univision News-channel? Boy, as a news-junky, I would
have absolutely loved the 2004-05 time period when they
ran many live events. Now with lo levels on Uverse,
this channel seems practicly on auto pilot. Thanks in
advance for any insites of this channel's future

If you remember, ABC News Now was originally carried on the ABC O&O subchannels, before they were replaced by localized programming, and then currently with the Live Well Network. I thought at least since ABC dropped the AccuWeather Channel from its stations, they could put ABC News Now right in its place, or at least create a hybrid local/national news service.

I used to get ABC News Now as a cable channel from RCN when I lived in Manhattan. I thought it was a pretty good, no frills news channel. Sometimes they'd have extended coverage of an event when the main ABC News at the end of something like a presidential address had to quickly get back to network comedies and dramas.

Other times, it was simply a series of unanchored news reports and features. Some might be from an ABC show like GMA or Primetime.

Sometimes I think ABC News Now was the only place a given ABC News feature or event could be seen. I especially liked a five minute segment Chris Cuomo did with a Catholic priest about current issues in the news from a religious perspective.

I now live in an area that gets Time Warner. They give me lots of channels but not ABC News Now.

Red Flag. I have a feeling ABCNN is likely toast, or headed there.

I viewed the channel off and on via FTA satellite until my setup died over a year ago. Rarely did I see a paid ad of any kind. Every commercial pod was pretty much given over to in-house promotionals. You know you're in trouble if your channel/station/network can't even clear ads for a Ginsu Knife. I expect ABCNN will go bye-bye and the ABC/UNI News Channel will take its place. The hispanic market's doing well right now.

This is a very odd channel indeed. I get it on Verizon Fios. It seems there are a lot of things produced just for the channel, but there's no advertising of any kind on it. Every "commercial break" is promos for ABC shows. When this started, it was a channel available on a subchannel of my local ABC affiliate, WFAA. If it was available that way today, this channel would make more sense. As it is, it seems like a drain on ABC News resources with little benefit.

Comcast hast it. Their use to be Fox News Edge and CBS Eye on People to. If they could get Charlie Gibson out of retirement, hire Dan Rather,Jack Snow,John S.,Forest Sawyer,Bryant Gumbel and so on maybe that will help out with Presidentinal Election coming up and then more Cable Systems woudl add it and could add Local Newscast to it.

For the record, I never remember any commercials on ABC News Now. I think it was originally intended to be a channel mostly for the ABC owned TV stations' secondary channels, although they don't use it anymore. So maybe there were cutaways for local spots and local weather and news.

Today I think ABC does it mostly as a website streaming channel. But if some cable providers want to pick it up, that's okay too.

I don't think it costs much run. An on-duty ABC reporter in the NY newsroom would record a minute or two of world and national news for the top and bottom of the hour but the other times, it was all news features available to ABC affiliates if they want them and segments done for GMA, Nightline or Primetime.

I mentioned some original content, such as the Chris Cuomo-and-the-Priest five minute weekly segment. But I think that's done with an idea that people will watch it streaming on the website. All these things might still be done for the website if there were no ABC News Now.
