ABC News Radio Anchor Brad Wheelis Leaves Network

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/119474/brad-wheelis-to-exit-abc-news-radio

I heard Brad tonight on the evening news on KOMO Seattle. He did a nightly call in with KOMO evening anchor Art Sanders recapping the top national stories. Art and the evening producer wished Brad well; he indicated he was leaving because he was writing a book.

Reading the press release, its unclear if Brad left of his own volition and ABC is therefore going to bring the evening newscast back to New York or if ABC decided to bring it back to New York and let Brad go. Chicken and the egg. The last time the Info Net cast had a primary anchor in New York was when Paul James anchored (until about 2003). When Paul James retired, Gil Gross replaced him, based out of Los Angeles.

Either way this is sad news as he was a tremendous news anchor. Didn't quite have the best pipes (though ABC continues to hire anchors and correspondants who have no business on the radio) but was totally unflappable. He never hesitated, paused, or flubbed a line. Ever.

My money is that current New York based overnight anchor Michael Barr moves into this time slot. He is a great anchor too, though I would prefer to hear Karen Chase or Larry Jacobs back on the Info Net.

ABC is moving the 6-11p newscasts to NEW YORK, and VP/GM STEVE JONES told ALL ACCESS, "We have made a business decision to stop originating our evening Information network newscasts from LOS ANGELES. We already have two amazing reporters based there, ALEX STONE and JASON NATHANSON, and they cover all our editorial needs. Plus, our reporters now are physically co-located with KABC-TV, making access to regional news even greater. The engineering resources necessary to support these newscasts can be better applied to other areas of our growing business."

Does this quote make sense? Given today's technology does it really matter where a newscast originates? I'd think it makes more sense to originate evening National content from the West Coast because it's three hours earlier there.

It sounds like they've also closed the ABC bureau there, moving their reporters in with KABC-TV. Perhaps more of the consolidation following the sale of ABC Radio five years ago.
