ABC News suspends David Wright over a project veritas sting

But ABC probably was also alarmed at Wright’s criticism of ABC News, which is owned by the Disney Co. At another point, he raises another longstanding critique of ABC News — that it blends news with promotion of Disney-owned movies and TV programs.

“Like now you can’t watch ‘Good Morning America’ without there being a Disney princess or a Marvel Avenger appearing,” he says. “It’s all self-promotional.”

In a statement Wednesday, ABC News said, “Any action that damages our reputation for fairness and impartiality or gives the appearance of compromising it harms ABC News and the individuals involved. David Wright has been suspended, and to avoid any possible appearance of bias, he will be reassigned away from political coverage when he returns.”

In the video, which the group said was taken while Wright covered the New Hampshire primary, a voice asks the reporter if he considers himself “a Democratic socialist,” and Wright seems to reply, “more than that, I consider myself a socialist.”

Project Veritas apparently had allegations on Wright though. But I understand Wright's point that Disney has must run segments where ABC News has to air segments over movie promotions owned by Disney.

"ABC7" (KGO-TV) in San Francisco, an O&O - frequently runs segments on the local news, touting new Disney movies, the new Disney streaming service, or Disney World/Land items all the time, and the anchors always act all happy and fun to be reading these items. It's quite irritating.

The Today Show originated from Universal Studios Theme Park. Guess who owns NBC?

Sounds to me like what used to (or still is called) "happy news" or "happy talk." Basically like Good Morning America all day and night.

Its a must run that the talent, News Director and GM has to say so they don't get fired from higher ups at Disney . Or now movies from 20th Century Pictures they have to do promos for Disney Plus but then again I get it.

And we thought the must-run "editorial" segments on Sinclair-owned newscasts were bad enough!

I saw an ad on Friday for one of the Universal theme parks. Keenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live was in the ad. You can figure out the rest!

Yeah WPVI in Philly use to be one of the best local newscasts, but Disney has ruined all of that outside the 6 & 11 broadcasts. 4pm to 6 however is the absolute worse. Just non-stop news about Disney or ABC programing. One anchor, Alicia Vitarelli, I swear is only there for this very reason. She basically anchors a segment called big talkers, which is 100% fluff, but 90% disney/abc promotion. During the return season of American idol they even had some former contestant on with her the day after each show to do a recap. Yes American idol, DWTS, & bachelor/bachelorette recaps are now news.

EDIT. About the disney+ service. Outside the non-stop promotion it got in the leadup to it's launch, it was the top story (called big story on wpvi) on either the 4 or 5 broadcast (probably both, but I only saw the one) on the day of the launch. Yep, on that November say apparently the most news worthy event was the launch of disney+

I didn't mean to imply that KGO-TV News had gone to hell. Kind of the opposite, actually. In ancient times pre-Disney ownership (1970s) the station's news was awful. Not only happy talk, but "if it bleeds, it leads" was the operating principle. The anchor at the time, Van Amburg (RIP) is reported to have teased an 11:00 story during prime time by saying, "Severed penis found on railroad tracks. Details at 11:00."

But since the mid 80's, it has been a perfectly respectable local news program, and remains that, despite the requirement to plug Disney products.

KGO-TV became more respectable by the time Loma Prieta Quake took place though. KGO in 1989 was known to be one of the first to confirm to the country that Loma Prieta Quake is real outside of California though under 1989 management.
