ABC News with Diane Sawyer

I was just curious - how have the ratings been since Diane Sawyer took over the anchor seat at ABC News?

Quite a bit better than I expected - even though her on-air performance is about as expected. As of the end of January, here was the total viewership and share:

Total Viewers Adults 25-54 Households

ABC 8,510,000 2.0/7; 2,450,000 5.6/10

NBC 10,280,000 2.6/9; 3,240,000 6.6/12

CBS 6,540,000 1.6/6; 2,040,000 4.4/8

Katie Couric continues to slide while Diane has actually made some modest gains. Brian Williams remains ahead though. None are anywhere near where their TV ancestors were 20 years ago - no surprise, but worth pointing out anyway.

There are many reasons why network news is not the giant it once was but maybe if the network news shows would deal in hard news as did their ancestors their ratings would improve. I, for one, can do without stories that don't matter and human interest fluff. There are plenty of other places for that.

Is the bulk of the advertising for network news prescription drugs and other such medications? The target demo on these shows must be in the 50's-60's.

But then how can you explain that a major advertiser on daytime TMZ is the Walk-In Tub Association?

Perhaps that, depending on the station, the ratings--and thus price for a spot--are so low that advertisers like that scoop up the bargains because it's about all they can afford.

On the network nightly news side, February may show some gains for Williams with the boost from Olympics coverage. Should be interesting to see.

...or...obviously, because many of the network evening news viewers are older - carrying on a habit they've had for 30+ years. I'm old as dirt, but I'm rarely home in the evening to catch the network news.
