Which source?

I don't think its the end of the network until whoever purchases it said so.

This might be the rebirth of the network as we know it

considering that Disney is such Penny Pinchers.

Maybe will go back to the old four network deal

I,F,E,C Right?

How will they get there news?

Citadel takes the prize! Source of the report is the Drudge Report and there is now an update on his site!

The report, sourced at thestreet.com, says a deal is near, but is not finalized.

Citadel (CDL:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) is closing in fast on a deal to acquire Disney's (DIS:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) radio properties, in a transaction that is said to value the stations at between $2.7 billion and $2.9 billion, according to sources.

"They're making progress," says one person who was closely involved in a rival bid for the properties. A deal could be announced as early as Monday, when Disney is due to report earnings, and comes on the heels of Disney's move last week to buy Pixar (PIXR:Nasdaq - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) for $7.4 billion to bolster its movie-animation efforts.

This is bad writing from The Street, because, as we all know, Disney isn't selling all their radio properties: they're keeping the Radio Disney brand, as well as the ESPN Radio brand.

In fact, I'm not sure any single report has even gotten right what all is for sale, since it appears from things I've read that not all the stations owned by ABC, Inc. are for sale.

W'll find out if/when the sale is final.

David--I've got $10.00 in my pocket. Do you think we could take that and start a competing bid? :)

It's strange that the writing is so bad. When there are transcripts of both Eisner and Iger saying that the branded Disney and ESPN stations were not part of the bidding, any reporter should be able to find them. Certainly, those stations could be included at the last minute if the bidder wants to pay for what are mostly unremarkable facilities dependent on Disney brands.

That would be highly leveraged! I will put in an additional $10 of seed money, though.

Hey, I'll put in ten too! Then we might get their attention, at least!

Gee, I dunno. I've already got $11.76 on the table to help buy WROC-TV in Rochester away from Nexstar. I'm not sure I can handle two big-money deals at once...
______________

Scott,

You need to save your money to make sure baby Antenna (oops I mean Ariel) gets into a good college and does not end up going to the Connecticut School of Broadcasting.

I suspect Disney wants to sell ABC Radio because they don't see it as having any growth potential, or do they just want the one-time financial gain? Some people thought NBC was crazy to sell off its radio division nearly 20 years ago, but I may be the only one who thinks the same way about ABC.

The money pays for nearly half of the Pixar purchase.

That's the most likely scenario. ABC Radio was/currently is the "gold standard" when it comes to network radio news, and that will most likely change under a new owner.

With Disney keeping the ESPN and Disney Brands im sure the ABC Radio news brand is staying in family at Disney.

I thought CBS News Radio was the biggest player in News Radio as CBS Radio owns more then a dozen I would say of News/Talk stations that do a great job. Take example of WCBS, KCBS, WBZ, WBBM, KDKA, KYW, and so on.

But anyways getting back to the ABC Radio sale I thought Entercom wanted to buy ABC Radio? I'd rather have them buy it then Citadel. I am sure if that does happen Citadel will sell the big markets off like New York with WPLJ and WABC. To what company I don't know I doubt CBS Radio would want them. WABC they wouldn't want as they got WINS 1010 and WCBS 880 and as for WPLJ they might just change the format as it competes with Jack 101.1.

I can't imagine anybody else wanting the mess that is Radio Disney. I can't think of a single other group of any repute which has such an assembly of poor signals. I'd venture to say (and BIAfn seems to concur) that most of the R-D O&O stations don't generate enough local revenue to pay their power bills. I suppose both Radio Disney and ESPN are more about extension of the brand rather than about generating local revenue. I'm also quite sure ABC would never turn lose these brands because they wouldn't want anybody else monkeying with their creative. Even scrapping the formats, a large marjority of the signals are fairly useless unless they can be had at fire-sale prices.

First, it is quite possible that the physical stations that make up Radio Disney may not be included in the sale to begin with. And it doesn't seem that the network's intellectual property is for sale.

But there's quite a few Radio Disney stations that would be quite lucrative to a new owner. Radio Disney's big market stations typically have pretty good signals, specifically the LMA on WQEW 1560 New York, 1110 KDIS (Pasadena) Los Angeles, 1300 WRDZ (La Grange) Chicago, 1580 KMIK (Tempe) Phoenix, and 1260 WMKI Boston. Though if these signals were cut from Radio Disney, the network would ultimately suffer, losing most large market penetration where implimentation of the Disney brand is critical.

It has been stated over and over again that the stations and the Radio Disney and ESPN nets are not in the deal package

This turkey is on 1560, and the transmitter in Queens, directional to the East. Bad signal in New Jersey, noisy even in the city.

Is a mid-tier signal for LA. Bad OC coverage.

Almost the worst signal in the metro except for the junk above 1550.

Another to of th eband turkey, highly directional and does not cover the market.

Has not covered the market for 40 years. Very limited.

None of those stations could be competitive except as part of the Disney net, where they do not compete with anyone.

If they did buy the New York ABC stations, they would have to spin off something as they already own three AMs and three FMs in the market.
______________

OK, perhaps some of your analysis is correct. I can at least testify that for WMKI, the signal is better than Radio-Locator pulls it off to be; it's one of the city's oldest signals. While WRDZ's signal is lacking in the areas north of Chicago, it's better than WCPT's (especially at night), and look at the ratings that they're pulling. Phoenix has very few decent AM signals other than KFYI and KTAR, making KMIK somewhat acceptable. And while KDIS' signal may be subpar at night, isn't the daytime coverage adequate?

WDRZ comes in great over 60 miles north of the transmitter.

Only problem it has is at night when WOOD Grand Rapids mixes in. 1300 is a great stick.
