ABC Threatens to Pull Affiliation from WLNE

Let's start the discussion... where does ABC land in Providence?

The only station without an affiliation of consequence would be WLWC-28 (CW). Nexstar (Four Points) would have to build a new news department, I'm sure.

WPRI 12.2? (send theCoolTV to .3).

I think they had tried to do that once before and failed. Can't remember but I think at one point one of the Providence TV channels were in jeopardy of losing their affiliation - but it never happened. I think this would be worse for ABC than it would be for 6. Good thing WLNE.com also goes to abc6.com

Maybe CBS goes back to WLNE, and ABC back to Channel 12.

Why would CBS want to hook up again with such a loser station?

The FCC would be on the verge of stepping in (or should be) on grounds that a market like Providence has a CW, an NBC, and an ABC-CBS-Fox-MyTV super-group. Not fair concentration of media.

Expect either to be watching "ABC 28" come fall or to see WLNE soldier on.

CBS didn't have a choice in the matter. In the late 1970's, Channel 12 got sold to Knight-Ridder Broadcasting, who had ABC affiliations with almost all of thier stations, and quickly came to an ABC affiliation deal for Channel 12.

Once WTEV, Channel 6 lost the ABC affiliation, CBS had no choice but to grudgingly accept WTEV...or else face losing representation in what was then a top 30 market.

And the unending string of failures, disappointments, and frustrations for WTEV/WLNE continues............

Chances are that WPRI would be a strong candidate, since its sister station WTNH/New Haven is affiliated with ABC. It would give the two stations some synergy.

I doubt that WPRI would want to lose CBS though, as it is the strongest network in the country.

Perhaps we would see WNAC try to take ABC, with FOX being tossed off to WLWC or WLNE.

My dark horse is Channel 36. ABC gets the station and converts it to a commercial license.

PBS would then end up on Channel 6. :D

I can't imagine LIN wanting to give up CBS or Fox in exchange for ABC. Losing Fox would mean losing football (including a few very lucrative Patriots games and the Super Bowl every three years) and giving up its 10 PM news franchise...and Idol, and Simpsons, and the lucrative 7-9 AM local morning news, and for what?

They would get a better syndicated morning show if WPRI switched, as well as a higher rated 6 PM national news, as well as NBA games.

I'm quite certain the ABC affiliation isn't going anywhere. Disney is playing a weak hand as strongly as possible, trying to extort the most money it can from various suitors for the station. At the end of the day, though, there isn't anywhere else viable for the affiliation to go. Disney knows it, and the bidders know it, too.

Scott is exactly right. Think about it: would LIN really want to exchange being Rhode Island's official station for the Patriots (CBS has rights to AFC teams - with exceptions) for being the official station of Dancing with the Stars? I think not.

This is just the typical posturing that coincides with contract negotiation time. As much as Disney/ABC may even want to dump a mess like WLNE, the other realistic options in the market are very unattractive.

I think you nailed it. ABC moving to WNAC or WLWC wouldn't exactly be making a step upward from WLNE. What they are doing is ensuring that they have a voice in whatever happens to WLNE at bankruptcy auction, since the deal that will maximize the money to the creditors is going to be one that ensures that ABC stays on board.

Not going to happen. I'm sure Lin would want to keep both FOX and Fox's sister network together on the same station.

WLNE won't lose ABC it will go to the wire.WPRI won't drop CBS either. The only other alternative would beABC going to WLWC and CW going to WLNE which would probably be the better of the two evils with somehow WLNE producing local news for WLWC and just having a ten o'clock news on WLNE.

OR..........

WJAR flipping to ABC and NBC to WLNE. that could happen.

Personally, After reading the story it sounds to me now that ABC already has a new affiliate in mind. sounds a little like of an attitude from ABC if you ask me.The question is WHO?

Is'nt WJAR redoing thier set? A little to much of an co insidence to me...
