ABC

Suprised nobody has talked about the ABC sale and what it means to Chicago and the future of the ABC properties. It will be interesting to see what they do.

Citadel will for sure flip 94.7. They seem to flip formats a lot.
______________

Citadel loves the country format in particular. Through the years they have even flipped high rated stations they buy to country. However, they are probably smart enough to know the country share in Chicago isn't large enough for two country stations. In fact, country was one of the many many formats that was tried and failed on the 94.7 frequency.

Add WLCS Muskegon, MI

They bought a small cluster consisting of WSHN-100.1 (Locally programmed CHR), WLCS (ABC Oldies Radio) and 97.5 (which was locally programmed country)

100.1 went ABC Urban AC
98.3 stayed the same
97.5 went satellite country, later a simmulcast of one of their sports stations.

Citadel hasn't updated their website in a good while. This happened in winter 2004.
______________

From what it looks like, they're similar to Cumulus, a company that serves mainly small market. But I was surprised when I listened to WBBM-AM early this morning that ABC is considering Citadel over Cumulus & Entercom for the ABC properties. I would have thought Entercom was going to be the one that would have likely got the ABC stations. For all we know, ABC might just hold onto the properties longer and take a pass at Citadel as well.

Subtract WJIM in Lansing.....they flipped to Top 40 in December

Any talk is speculation at this point and largely irrelevant.

There's been plenty of useless speculation since the ABC radio
sale was announced.

I don't profess to be a know it all, so let me apologize if I come off that way. It's not my intention. I just want to jump in here with what I've read and some of the info that I've gotten from Citadel managers that I happen to know.

First of all, Citadel wouldn't touch either 94.7 or WLS, as each of those properties have an extreme value for just who they are. 94.7 is the ONLY oldies station in town that people are clammoring for and the numbers are just starting to show that. No worries I'm sure to oldies fans. ESPN stations aren't part of the deal, so we're not even discussing Schwartie and MVP.

The other part of this is that Entercom had been reluctant to a huge part of the deal that ABC wanted. Essentially they want to own half of a 'new company' that would be created with the sale of both the stations and the Network. David Field told the trades a couple of times that he wasn't sure that part was something they could get into, especially with it being a public company. Citadel is NOT a public company. They're owned privately by Forstmann Little (they also own Topps baseball cards, FYI). They don't have to worry about shareholders. This is an attractive situation for them, mostly because it then limits some of their financial liabilities, even with the high price tag. At this point, I'd make a logical guess that this deal almost done. Disney needs the money to buy Pixar, so it makes sense all way around.

If Citadel gets the stations, I can see them keeping oldies on 94.7, but drop the Shannon satellite feed, and go to a 60s-70s oldies station kind of like WJMK was before they went Jack. Or if they want to keep it satellite which is very doubtful, just flip it to ABC's Oldies Radio which is newer oldies compared to The True Oldies Channel. I would think oldies on 94.7 and WLS would be a good ad combo.
