ABC15 Called Racist

On Saturday evening, after the verdict was announced in the Zimmerman case, ABC15 reporter Sara Goldenberger went to Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles restaurant to ask patrons their opinion on the verdict. "Phoenix Business Journal" editor tweeted shortly after the story aired, “As a journalist, I’m appalled @abc15phx went to Lolo’s in Phoenix to get reaction to #ZimmermanVerdict. Why a chicken and waffle restaurant?”

This is an example of "manufactured news".

If I were the manager of Lo Lo's I would have ushered the reporter out then called the GM and told him not to send any salesmen around - ever.
 
No surprise...it seems that nowadays, everybody and anybody is a racist. Do people even understand what that word means anymore?
 
Why on earth are "media" sources repeating this ridiculous piece? It's not like you're going to find people "on the street" in Phoenix who want to stop in 110 degree weather and comment. So, the reporter chooses a restaurant that actually caters to a diverse population (at least it did the last time I was there) and solicit "person on the street" comments. Am I missing something here?

By diverse, do you mean black? Diverse: composed of distinct or unlike elements or qualities, differing from one another. If they're mostly black customers in LoLo's I would not call it diverse- I'd call it homologous.

ABC15 wanted to hear what the black folks thought of the verdict (that in itself was racist: making a determination that their (black person's) opinion is considered as a point in itself- as opposed to a non-blacks. We all, like a holes, have opinions- and to assume that a black person's is inherently "different" or needs to be addressed as such is rather distasteful, and the fact that the so called "diverse" (cough cough- PC word, I get it!) location was scouted for the man on the street is so downright icky it's worth noting. Fried chicken n waffles? Please. Why not just ask anybody? Nope- they had to make it racially significant. That was racist.
 
Um, I meant "diverse". If I meant African-American, I would have said African-American. LoLo's and Mrs. White's get a diverse crowd of all races. I go to eat at these establishments several times a year and the crowd is always 50-65% white. So, please don't read anything extra into my statement.

ABC15 certainly has the right to go anywhere to get comments. Since the media has been painting this as a "Black vs. White" issue (although it has conveniently ignored that fact that Zimmerman is visibly Hispanic), it absolutely makes sense that they would solicit comments from a diverse set of people. Going to LoLo's was NOT the least bit "racist".

I don't know what the news directors at 15 discussed before sending their reporter(s) to LoLo's but I do know what the majority of people think when they hear a "chicken & waffles" restaurant. It is the same thing as saying "soul food". It may not be completely factual but it is popular usage.

If I had to guess (without too much guesswork) I would say they wanted the opinions of Black people and so targeted that restaurant. Is that racist? No. But it is somewhat irresponsible as it promotes the media-driven position that Blacks in general oppose the findings of the jury and is akin, following the murder of Martin Luther King, to asking Black people "what do you think?" Irresponsible and sensationalist journalism.

I'm sorry I guess I'm lost here. I just think that the criticism of ABC15 is rather unwarranted in this particular case. If I were doing "man on the street" interviews, I would gather opinions from a variety of different people. Did ABC15 not solicit other opinions???

We don't appear to know that. All I know is they sent a reporter to a restaurant known for its Black clientele. That doesn't qualify to me as "man on the street".

Well, I can see that nobody here can really make a coherent argument about ABC15 being "racist". So, instead, you nitpick.. ::) ::) ::)
