It is pronounced Matt-e-son. I lived there for years. No one in the village says "Matt-Son."

You can always tell a person NOT from the village by the way they say it.

True...

Unfortunately some people pronounce it with "dull T's" so it sounds like "Madison." I once worked in Matteson, and recall numerous times people would say the town name, only to followed by the question, "Madison Wisconsin?" No, MaTTeson Illinois.

Sorry, bro. Hate to burst your bubble and join in the bandwagon, but I've always heard it to be "Matt-e-son". I have friends who live nearby. Who knows? Maybe it was supposed to be "Matt-son". Was Des Plaines supposed to be pronounced "deh plahn" or its majority-accepted pronounciation of "dess playnes"?<P ID="signature">______________

OK, try this one: Norfolk, Nebraska. The residents of Norfolk pronounce it "NORFORK." Anybody out there know why? Johnny Carson was from there. He always said, "Norfork."

I tend to side with whatever the elected (or appointed) town officials say. In the case of Matteson, they say it with three syllables. They were urging businesses to say it that way, as well.

Same goes for Bourbonnais, which the town officials *usually* call Bour-bon-AY. However, many people in town say Bour-BOHN-iss. I've heard it both ways on Chicago radio and TV stations. WVLI Kankakee personalities have always said Bour-bon-AY anytime I have listened.

They were also recruiting white people to move into their town. Not the brightest public officials on record so I'd take whatever they say with a grain of salt, hell, they probably don't even know. Most of the old timers from the south side called it Matt-Sun.
