Abilene format flip?

While traveling through Abilene yesterday, I tuned into 1560 AM expecting to find ESPN radio, but instead found alternative music. When did this happen?

Or has anyone noticed?

Any word on strategy?

In a town that has 107.9 and 98.1, along with 102.7, seems a rock station on AM would have an uphill battle.

My guess would be desperation more than anything else. Basically, ESPN raised its fees beyond what 1560 was willing to pay. So, they had to do something.

I'd hate to have to make this programming decision. In Abilene, you already have two news/talkers, classic country, Spanish, CHR, AC, Oldies, rock, Christian, mainstream country, and so on. THere's no undiscovered niche. Any format 1560 would have would have direct competition, and lets face it, 1560 doesn't have a good signal. Maybe adult standards (if there's still a satellite feed for that) but even that offers challenges in selling.

True, but when it comes to selling, there's usually just one (maybe two in larger markets) Spanish stations that are able to really pick up the agency and local business... and I think the folks that own 1560 and 1340 already have that station on 106.3.

If this is indeed true, it seems to me the ultimate cost-cutter would have been to simulcast 106.3 on 1560. Kudos to 'em for going against conventional wisdom (even if it is an uphill battle).

I wish it were alternative. For a classic rock station, I have to say the Zoo did play a lot of songs I like. Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper, Def Leppard's Photograph, AC/DC's Thunderstruck, Midnight Oil's Beds are Burning, etc.

For an alternative rocker like myself, this is probably the best classic rock station radio has to offer, at least in the 30-minute set I heard while passing through on US 84/I-20.
