ABQ Talk Watch: Fall trends

Granted, I haven't seen the talk demo breakdowns since the spring book, but observing from a state away, it appears that KAGM is in bigger trouble as it slips below CC libtalker KABQ in 12+ share. KKOB further shores up it's lead among all listeners, surging into double-digit shares again, putting it a full TEN SHARES above AGM's flailing FM talker and the Ahrens crew.

KABQ surprisingly stays put after having lost 50% of its audience in the summer book, although I still believe they are easily #2 among talk stations to only KKOB in all dayparts except mornings.

Just for fun, I'd like to see my hot talk format on KAGM (the kind of talk that's supposed to be on FM) just to see if it would do better... couldn't be any worse. And I wouldn't have to waste millions on billboards with Larry Ahrens picture.

Since KAGM hit the Air KOB has gained almost 3 points! The GM at KABG has now found out what everyone in the market knew Larry ain't that good and people listen to KOB not Larry. There was also a reason why Diane ain't on TV anymore. There also was a reason why Chris Jackson hasn't been on the air for years. They ain't that good and all ya have to do is read the numbers

Just curious, where do you get your information? I'm kind of new on the radio discussion scene, so I don't know much about trends or books (I'm guessing that those are certain types of ratings systems...what exactly is the difference between them?). Where might I be able to find radio ratings?

What would shows would be involved in your "Hot Talk" format? I hope that KAGM doesn't completely turn away from the Talk format; their simulcast on 94.7 KBOM is the only non-Air America Talk station that we get here in Taos 24/7. Besides 1340 KVOT, which was put back on the air within the past month or two, and KKOB, which we get during the daytime, that's the only Talk station we get.

You can get Arbitrons from anyone who pays the large sum to subscribe, ie any decent radio station. General 12+ numbers are available on various websites we can't mention here.

A hot talk format in Abq would include traditional format hosts like Tom Leykis, Don and Mike only because they're free, Phil Hendrie, and some midday sports talk to eliminate the need for ratings-no-go KKNS. Also eliminates the need to plug a local host in a daypart where no hot talk syndicated shows exist.

Although in Taos, can't you get KKOB? And at night, of course, plenty of good stations.

Let's hope that your Hot Talk format would fare better than KAGM and KBOM currently are. At this point, the ratings can't go too much lower...can they?

In Taos, we get KKOB during the daytime. At night, there are plenty of good stations that tend to fade in and out...I've found that one of the best stations with the most reliable signal at that time is 1110 KFAB-AM from Omaha, Nebraska.

Not to say that's the absolute best use of the signal, but I don't think it would do as poorly as many would say. I personally am a talk radio creature and wouldn't own/run/program a station that was music.

KOA is a good one, too.

Room for a new rhythmic?

A station that has really benefited from KAGMs (so far) failed attempt at talk is KKSS. Having their long time rival go talk was the best gift they could ask for. Now the question is should another station flip rhythmic to take on KKSS?

It's positioned 180 degrees incorrectly. Diane &
Larry are not demographically desirable from
an FM Talk standpoint. New-Talk FM's only work
in market's that have weak signals or badly programmed
AM talkers.

It may happen. Rumor is that Mega 104.1 is going to drop off and change formats any day now, and I'd have to think Clear Channel would at least look at rhythmic as a new format.

Where did you happen to hear this rumor? It never hurts to see if you heard this from a reliable source or not...
Edited by JM_pstar on 12/18/05 09:33 PM.

Check the San Antonio/Austin board under the "Channel 1023 now The River" thread. David Eduardo has an impressive resume when it comes to broadcasting and is usually right about these things. He says he hears Mega 104.1 is changing formats and soon. No one seems to know what the station would change to, but I'd have to think Clear Channel would look at all its options.
