ABS-CBN TV Philippines will shut down their O&O's

This is a result of the network in a dispute over their broadcasting license

As 12 local “TV Patrol” programs mark their final newscast today, some of ABS-CBN’s broadcasters articulated how the shutdown would affect local communities and their ability to voice out the injustices in their area.

Karen Davila and Chiara Zambrano acknowledged ABS-CBN Regional Network Group’s vital role in these communities via Twitter today, Aug. 28.

The TV network’s cancelation of programs came a few weeks after the House of Representatives denied the media company’s bid for a new 25-year franchise.

“These providers of credible news to local communities – in their language – will go dark forever,” Zambrano said. “In this endless chain of painful days, today hurts deeper than others.”

Today, all stations of the ABS-CBN Regional Network Group across the country will air their final newscast.

Filipino viewers expressed their gratitude to TV Patrol for its decades-long public service after it announced the final airing of its Regional Network Group (RNG) across the country on August 28.

ABS-CBN management previously announced that they will lay off workers in its businesses and subsidiaries effective on August 31 following the non-renewal of its congressional franchise, which permanently shut down its television, radio and digital services.

In separate statements, ABS-CBN announced that TV Patrol’s 12 regional programs will air their final newscasts after more than three decades of serving the Filipino people.

The post on TV Patrol’s page also featured the photos of their longtime anchors who provide their viewers in the provinces local and national news and information in their own dialects.

For those of you wondering about the Philippine TV Markets they are divided into DMA's in the same way as Nielsen does for the USA. Example Manila, Davao City Baguio and Cebu are separate TV and radio markets within the Philippines. In this case the O&O's of ABS-CBN TV are being shut down due to a dispute with congress.
Yes this is similar to a what if scenario of NBC, CBS, ABC or Fox had their O&O's shut down around the nation because of a license dispute.

Actually I would liken it to Canada or Mexico instead. The structure is much similar with the Big 4 having O&Os in the major Canadian cities and translators in rural areas. But, like Mexico, there are almost no local cut-ins. It's the same national satellite feed delivered 24/7.

What makes US media somewhat unique is that the USA is the least centralized nation for government and administration. States and counties and cities have far more authority here than in nearly all other nations; the US was founded on the idea of not allowing too much centralized government power. Things like the electoral college, the even allocation of U.S. Senate seats and the like are other aspects of this "closer to the people" system.

So, except for crimes and things like the building of a sewer project, there is not much significant local news in most cities in much of the rest of the world.

Canada is too small for comparisons, and so much of TV is government owned that it does not make a good comparison with the US. Mexico is a valid comparison but so would be France or Spain or Chile or Brazil or the like.

The US system of government requires local media for transparency to be preserved. But local newspapers are all but dead, and TV and radio can not afford complete local coverage. We are losing a great deal of the check and balances a very decentralized democracy requires. Politicians, when not closely monitored, tend to spoil faster than potato salad on a sunny day!

As in this case backlash ensued over the ABS-CBN Network license dispute in the Philippines. It brings up certain parts of the Philippines not getting local news as an example.
