AC and Classic Hits

Amazing how Miami has four varieties of AC (Soft, Rhythmic, Hot, Mainstream) and two classic hits stations in Big and Majic. There are so many format holes that could be profitably filled in this market and everybody is sitting idly by with the same crap. Unbelieveable.

Although I am not necessarily disagreeing with your overall market observations, I am curious what market format holes you have identified that you believe "...could be profitably filled". Additionally, which existing station(s) format(s) do you believe should be sacrificed to make room to filll the identfied format hole(s)?

Although Big does play familiar stuff to rock fans, "Classic Hits" is a kind of unofficial moniker for what used to be called "oldies" in radio jargon. With few exceptions, "classic hits" are songs that have appeared on 45's.

Big hits of the 60s & 70s, even mellow ones like "Love Is Blue" or "Love's Theme" would qualify for classic hits, but Big wouldn't touch those songs w/ a 10 ft. pole. A song would have to "rock" for Big to consider it.

That said, Majic has experimented with stuff that Big could play or has played.

I suppose it's mainly called "classic hits" to separate itself from true "oldies", which would include hits of the 50s & early 60s (basically pre-Beatles). Very few stations in the US still play the latter, although the 50s/60s board has a thread about it.

Anyone going through the Sebring area should turn on AM 1050---there's your oldies!

Classic Rock, however, is harder edged than Classic Hits, and Big continues to play songs that Majik would not touch. For example, Big plays ACDC. The other day, I even heard "Sister Christian" by an 80s hair-band whose name is escaping me. Again, such a song would not be heard on a Classic Hits station.

That's exactly the reasoning. Many stations felt the "oldies" term, at least in sales, was fatal, so the term classic hits was used. Arbitron will add a format definition / name if there is enough interest and a minimum number of stations actually doing the format.

"Classic Hits" are Top 40 songs, with the core year somewhere in the 70's. "Oldies" is also a Top 40 hits of the past format with its core music in the 60's.

So the name came out of a desire to not carry the image of being 60's music (and 60-year-old listeners) by stations that shed the 60's stuff. This is all about perceptioons of format appeal in the buying community.

Scott...I would respectfully have to disagree...Big leans Classic Hits.

Arbitron's SIP page indicates:

Winter 2011 Station Information Profile (SIP) on File with Arbitron

That is information submitted by the station and reviewed by Arbitron for factual correctness.

The Greatest Hits

I noticed that just this past week MAJIC-102.7 dropped 'Of The 60s & 70s' from their nickname and are simply jingling with 'The Greatest Hits'. They are also diving deep into the 80s now. I got excited when they played Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight" during afternoon drive-time. MAJIC's done lost their mind, and I LOVE IT !
