AC/Cape May Ratings

WJSE...ouch.

Which is a shame. I actually prefer the station to G Rock and Radio 104.5 because they play less sappy Adult Contemporary fodder than those two stations (see: Coldplay - Speed Of Sound, Seether/Amy Lee - Broken) and about three times as many currents as either. I sure would listen if I could receive it and I know others that feel the same. It's actually far closer to a true Alternative despite its one obvious flaw.

The problem with the station can be summed up like this: Classic Rock. I think that the new rock audience does not want to hear the likes of Aerosmith and AC/DC mixed in - there's already two in-market playing acts like this all the time, and there's out of market stations like WCHR and WMMR that also offer more of the same. If the station ditches Classic Rock and maybe allows more room for disc jockey banter (and while we're at it, how about ditching the "Otto Mation" for six hours?), I don't see why it wouldn't improve.

I rest my case.....(he likes it....it's great....the public hates it....doesn't matter..it's classic roots are to blame!..) perhaps your station (which I never heard of) plays too many bands that YOU like and that's why it's dogging.....just maybe.....

What is great about WJSE? It can be summed up in one word: Variety. The mix never gets stale, they don't play the same songs day in and day out, they play more Currents and have a deeper library than other stations. They're playing the new titles by The Killers, The Fratellis, Kaiser Chiefs, Silversun Pickups and others while the other stations just continue to churn out the older titles over and over again. And it doesn't matter what rock genre it falls in: WJSE is playing everything from In This Moment and Killswitch Engage to Saosin and Army Of Me. Whereas Radio 104.5 and G Rock are probably playing more Linkin Park than any decent person should be subjected to. Nothing against the band even though they're not my cup of tea, but both stations play them so much that you wind up despising them.

but apparantely no one cares because they tanked in the ratings......yes...that's a station to follow.....(and of course it's all because of Aerosmith of course....not the bands you mentioned that no one cares about.....) FYI- I love alt rock and can never get enough LP.......don't care about army of me though.....

Don't waste your breath on SoulCrusher. He's never happy.

Radio 104.5 has nearly QUADRUPLED their cume in two months. Apparently people aren't tired of Linkin Park.

Apples and oranges, Beejus. Radio 104.5 is a totally different animal. Rumba sunk to depths that were getting pretty close to Free territory. CC was smart and was the first to capitalize on the vacancy left by Y 100 and WYSP. They can afford to play it really safe and it won't matter - people will tune in because they prefer it to MMR and whatever they're playing, whether it's Bad Company or Whitesnake or some other fossil rockers. On the whole, it does sound different from the competition. Yes, they throw in too many Hot AC titles (Mat Kearney, Lifehouse, The Fray, latter day Goo Goo Dolls, etc.) but that could be taking advantage of the fact that there isn't a Hot AC in the market per se (Ben is the closest thing). It's doing well for now, but expect people to tire of the mundane predictability if this goes on.

WJSE used to be a solid performer in its market, routinely pulling 4 shares. It was sold during a somewhat slow time for the Alternative format, when it was trying to decide what the next big thing was. Access1 took it in a somewhat Active direction, emphasizing harder acts and adding a liberal dose of Classic Rock. The problem is one of two things: The fact that the station is an Active/Alternative hybrid, or the fairly frequent playing of Classic Rock titles. Let's say you're someone not familiar with radio. You're a fan of more Modern Rock acts. You turn on WJSE and you hear Guns N' Roses or something and you think "I can hear this in a million other places". That one experience may just be enough to turn you away from the station. That's why I think the station would benefit from dropping the Classic Rock - plenty of it can already be heard on sister station WMGM anyway. The other problem has a lot to do with the signal and the lack of advertising presence. The signal is a tiny Class A signal that does not cover the entire market and you never see any billboards for The Ace. Finally, there's the general lack of jock banter and the automation. I don't see why this station can't return to their former glory. While WZXL is continuing to spin Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles like there's no tomorrow, it's obvious that the market has an audience for a station like this. With a few changes, it can be a top performer again.

WJSE was also running Stern in morning drive during its 4-share days.
