AC hits after Christmas

Stations don't have the budget to do call out research like they used to. If they did, I wonder if there would be any burn on "Hey Soul Sister"? If there is no burn I must be totally out of the mainstream.

I'm wondering if "burn" even exists anymore among AC listeners. The format has been in this rut for a decade and still racks up good numbers. Would a typical AC powerhouse actually add listeners if it started pushing new music like a hot AC or a CHR (not that those charts haven't gotten sludgier over the years)? I have a feeling the typical listener really doesn't care that he/she's still hearing "Hey Soul Sister" because that listener is used to having the songs he/she likes on the radio for months on end.
A/C stations win by playing familiar music by familiar artists. New music & artists play the role of keeping a 35-54 female in touch with today. Because of how people listen to A/C stations...at work...in the background....it takes newer songs to get familiar to the audience longer than a CHR station that plays currents up to 60-70 times a week. It's one reason why very few "A/C exclusive hits"

And the madness continues....the AC station I listen to is now just days away from having played "Hey, Soul Sister" in heavy rotation for a year with no end in sight! That means 5x/day for the last 365 days.

I wish this song would just...go away. I know listeners want familiar music, but do they want something that familiar? Will this song never burn? I was hoping after Christmas it would, but it still hasn't.

One year is not the record. "How Do I Live" by Leann Rimes stayed on the top 40 charts for well over a year (61 weeks!), so it was probably on the AC charts even longer than that!

"The Game of Love" by Santana and Michelle Branch showed up on WRVR's (Memphis AC station) year-end survey for three straight years! (2002, 2003, 2004).
