AC-Oldies station coming to Surrey, B.C.

South Fraser Broadcasting was granted an English language AC-Oldies station today in Surrey, B.C. on 107.7 with 1,066 watts (2,500 watts maximum ERP). Antenna height will be 132.4 metres (EHAAT) with a directional radiation pattern.

The new station will be 100% oriented towards Surrey with a heavy emphasis on news during AMD and PMD. South Fraser Broadcasting is owned by Sukvinder Singh Badh of Vancouver. Mr. Badh also owns tourist information station CFVT 89.3 in Vancouver and recently applied to get 580 in Edmonton back on the air.

CRTC DECISION:

The tower will be located at 49 11' 26" N. & 122 50' 33" W. which puts it in the heart of the Surrey Central district. I'm guessing maybe atop the roof of a highrise in the area.

This is interesting. I've never heard of a FM radio station originating in Surrey before. I really would love to see the proposed coverage map of this station.

Was South Fraser Broadcasting the same company that was trying to start a FM South Asian station in Surrey in a recent application? I always thought it would be interesting to see what kind of range we would see with a station based in Surrey.

If you open up the 2011-0173-2 link on the following CRTC document you will find coverage maps and all other pertinent information related to the application:
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2013/2013-568.htm#d1

The coverage maps show the 0.5 mV/m contour just skirting Aldergrove. I guess that means it will be the end of THE END for me. Similar to losing KISW a few years back when the CBC launched Radio 2 service in Chilliwack on 99.9. The FM band in the Vancouver-Victoria-Seattle corridor is beyond being saturated now.

I know the feeling. The Vancouver/Victoria/Bellingham market is pretty interesting to follow at least. I had an interesting thought the other day - how long is it going to be before a Surrey based company tries to establish a FM station from Mount Constitution?
