This one is simple but I do believe it helped the station I worked for not only in the short run but also in the long run. The format first off is soft A/C I don't think it would work as well on a CHR leaning A/C. The station by the way was a move in and hadn't really been on the air all that long. This promotion helped introduce people to the radio station.
The promotion was: Take Your Radio To Work Day. We asked listeners to send us a card telling us they listen at work and of course when and where. Then we would go out and try to catch them listening to our station. I seem to remember we did it just once a week, on Thursday I believe. The jocks would go out with a tape recorder to get the winners reaction as we awarded them $100. We took the tape back to the station and made a short promo out of it. After all everyone likes to hear themselves on the air right? Later the amount of money was increased to $1000! it was simple and not only did it help TSL but also cume since the person in the office usually got the other people in the office to listen as well. The jocks doing the promotion also helps I think because then the listener feels a personal connection with the jock on the air. It's positive reinforcement. Naturally the jock has to be very nice to the winner and make it a very positive experience. In the rare case where someone isn't listening to the station you have to be very nice and diplomatic telling them you will put their entry back in so you may come back in the future so be sure to listen.
This gave the station a lot of good will and really made a difference. This same station is still doing well today and I have to believe this simple promotion has a lot to do with it.
