Academy Awards and ABC? How long?

How long has ABC been carrying the Academy Awards? It seems like forever! Also, why is their bug never on in the corner during the show?

P.S. Who airs the show in Canada, just for the heck of it? ???

The award ceremony has been on ABC since the 70s, and will continue to hold until 2014:

Even though the ratings are lower than what they use to be (last year's was second lowest rated telecast on record), ABC still reaps the advertising benefits, especially since they moved the ceremony to February sweeps.

The reason for the ABC bug not being there is because of some business deal between the Academy and ABC...can't remember all the specifics at this time, but ABC cannot display their bug and they can't say the network's name over the air in the ceremony.

But don't quote me on this. Can anyone varify it?

According to Wikipedia (take with a grain of salt) NBC broadcast the Academy Awards from 1953 until 1959 and again from 1971 - 1975. ABC carried them between 1960 and 1970 and since 1976 and is contracted to carry them until at least 2014, but I wouldn't be surprised if they re-up long before then considering its almost always one of ABC's highest-rated programs of the year. And it has become infinitely more important since they were moved to the tail-end of February sweeps a few years back.

OK, as for the network bugs, what about other countries which air the show? Is the rule the same for them? Does this mean that ABC is taking a pool feed or is it their cameras?

Saw them online ...

4 hours and 16 minutes... 7 minutes from tying the record

I thought something was interesting about this Oscar Broadcast. Locally we have some schools delaying due to snow. Our local ABC station ran a crawl stating "Will Air School Closings After The Oscars."

Anyone have any idea why a station would do this? Contract issue with ABC or the Oscar's?

I noticed that right after they made ran that crawl both of our other two stations (CBS & NBC) kept their closings up. Hmm…maybe they were watching the Oscars.

Common sense disctates the latter, at least for the on-stage part of the show. After all, the show is being seen in 150 countries - many of them live. However, you will note that announcers Don LaFontaine and Gina Tuttle did mention ABC in the network's own sponsor continuity and local break cues.

As to the network bug, I'll bet the Academy "sprayed some Raid" on that. Good on them. (Other countries don't have to follow any Academy dictates, as far as I know)

Finally the running time: the ceremony itself timed out at 3:52 this year. No matter what they do to shorten things, it just makes it longer. If they can just get Best Picture in by 9 PM PT, that would suit most everyone just fine.

One thing I noticed this year is that they really loaded the "big" categores toward the tail end. Seems they used to come on with at least one big one early on like "Best Actress." They didn't even do that this year....not to denigrate the "smaller" awards that most people don't care about. I'm just saying they would do better to sprinkle the bigger awards throughout the night, saving "Best Picture" til the end. Just my humble opinion....

I know the Emmys have started to hold in the technical awards in a seperate ceremony; perhaps it's time for the academy to do the same.

Has anyone heard what the overnight ratings were for the ceremony?

Drudge had 27 rating/42 share on his site this morning. 3rd lowest rated airing.

The Oscars already have one technical awards ceremony. Imagine how long the Oscars would be if that didn't exist! If they would do away with some of the montages, things would be better. The show is too long and goes on too late.
