I don't consider the original album edit of "sexy back" to be dance, and it is most likely that others wouldn't either. As far as all the other artists you mentioned / described (Pitbull, Britney, Madonna)...etc, many of them are now getting "treated" the same way Rihanna, Akon, and other artists are with complaints on many online sites. For instance, Imeem and YouTube... there are complaints for each one of those artists I've listed (and more) about them "going techno". Some are saying "it's ok", while others are saying "I don't like Ne-yo / Rihanna / Beyonce...etc. and all of those people who turned techno". On the Beyonce forum for "beautiful nightmare" or whatever that song is called, there were a few comments about wondering why she's going techno and using autotune like everyone else, and there was one girl who said "I think the song is ok. Looks like this techno sound will be the future of r&b music. I guess it's ok as long as they don't start talking in those robotic voices again..."
We have a club in Phoenix that is known for tech- I meant, DANCE, and whenever my younger sister hears certain songs by Flo Rida, Baby Bash, Pitbull, Akon...etc, she describes it as "that song is so something that they'd play at Myst...". In her mind, Myst is a techno club.
So.... with that being said, a very interesting turn of events is beginning to happen as "everything turns techno in 2009". People are being forced to accept that something is going on, and their old ways of thinking are no longer working, so this is now the current result of the situation;
MOST PEOPLE HAVE ADOPTED A NEW SUBCONSCIOUS THOUGHT PROCESS SIMILAR TO THIS:
"hmmmm... well everything is becoming so technoey, so either I must
A. hate everything new that's coming out, OR
B. ONLY LIKE THE TECHNO SONGS BY THE POP ARTISTS I ALREADY KNOW.
B is the one that's happening the most. While there are some who are clueless and unaware to the similarities of this new pop sound to dance music, there are many more who are aware that SOMETHING is going on with the tempo's and sound of music today, and for all those dance fans and producers, dj's, artists, etc. on this forum, on clubs, doing interviews on current tv/various shows, and pretty much world wide, they can see how all of this is beginning to cause more U.S. people to be more acceptive to the electronic scene.
~ For the younger, new generation of school kids, most really don't care what it is or what it's called because all they know is that this techno, evolutionized hip hop, pop, rap, electro-pop, UPTEMPO STUFF, r&b, song with that techno sounding beat, club stuff...etc. is what's cool and what's in. I wouldn't include "Baltimore Club Music" as a term the majority knows (yet) because how many people have you heard saying "lets go to that Baltimore Club Music club" or "That song is so Baltimore Club Musiccy.."?
~ The parents... well, the people who are now the parents.... are now just confused.... or will most definitely become "those old folks" who will only like the old school and don't care for anything new, so it doesn't matter to them what it's called anyway. This "sudden flip to techno" will only intensify how much old school (hip hop generation) folks will reject the new school urban pop sound.
The term "Booty Bass" has been forgotten by most, and to some people today it doesn't even exist at all. Therefore, it has become somewhat irrelevant today, despite the fact that it has pretty much returned to the mainstream. The term "Freestyle" will die relatively soon to the same extent booty bass has, along with the term "2 Step" in London.
When you really look into what is going on today in radio in terms of commercial dance play, the only REAL SOLID DIFFERENCE between today's mainstream dance is
1. The Modernization of The Sound w/ Less Lyrical Quality,
2. A lot more rap has been added in the ones that do contain rap, and
3. Most of today's mainstream dance hits are from artists that transferred from another genre instead of being straight dance artists.
When it all becomes old school, it will sound like it all belongs to a certain generation, the exact same way much euro dance and 90's hits sounds to us today. The autotune for the next generation after the current one in the next 10 to 15 years will be similar to what the electronic voices of Planet rock and Egyptian Lover sound like to us today.
