ACCESS.1 ATLANTIC CITY MOSTLY SOLD

The Press of Atlantic City is reporting that Access.1 has sold most of their radio properties (WMGM, WJSE, WOND, AND WTAA) to a local group.

The sale, apparently, does not include WMGM-TV, WTKU, or WGYM.

It's WMGM-FM, WOND, WTAA, WTKU and WJSE.
WGYM and WMGM-TV are not included.

Many of the new owners are posters on this board,
so if you ever want a job, be nice.

Who are the new owners, out of curiosity?

It sounds like (and this is just a guess) Access.1 doesn't want to hang onto a stand-alone TV station in an area where they don't own anything else. Are they going to sell it?

And what happens to 1580 in Hammonton? The station sounds like it needs a good deal of work, but is it worth putting money into? Hammonton is a rich town, but does it need or want its own little station? There's farm land on all four sides of Hammonton, which kinda limits its sales scope to Rts. 54 and 30.

If one of the three is the person I've been told it is, someone who has a track record in the market going back decades, then all I can say is...this is going to be great.

As a former morning producer at WOND, board op and emergency dj at WMGM, OM for what became WTAA, and one of the people who signed on 102.7 back in 1991, let me congratulate the new owners, and if you who I think you are, PM me. I want to work for you in any capacity you need people in. We need to bring the Green Group management back home.

According to the article, Access.1 keeps WTKU as well. Interesting...

I worked with Brett at WAYV for years when I was on the air there...he's as nice as can be, professional, knowledgeable, and loads of fun to be around. There are other people on this team that are all about "local, fun, personality radio"...One is a huge player in this market already....I assume it will be out in a few days...I wish i could tell you guys now.

So, how does everyone think this venture will perform?

Merc, so far, it seems Atlantic has their heads screwed on straight. A local focus is what will drive these stations. Hopefully, this will mean less voicetracking and more local DJ's, especially kids looking to get in and veterans looking to get BACK in. Also, more chance taking, as far as the music goes. To survive, radio must break away from research at the hands of consultants. I say let's give them a chance and encourage them as they "buck the trend" of conglomerate ownership.

They also want to sell hammonton for about 250 thousand dollars. Its not worth it, but I guess they figured some sucker would buy it. It needs new grounding at the tower site, a new transmitter and more. I heard someone offered them 150 thousand but they turned it down. Local is the way to go, because rt 30 is starting to develop more, local sports, news etc.

So, let's say these upgrades were made. How much more of a reach would GYM garner? Again, I turn to Sir McNally to address. Besides, how much would a new ground system and XMTR go for nowadays? Not to mention, studio/office space (which could go for $300-400K right there)?

I take it WGYM could be a player if the place was given TLC, and a format was found that would make money. A good place to start would be to simulcast the TV newscasts. But before that would happen, I'd upgrade the signal. With a new transmiter and ground system, the station would do OK with 1 kW day opwer. But what would be the killer is the 9 watt night signal, protecting WLIM on Long Island, and WPGC near Washington. It also protects Canada to some degree, as 1580 is a Canadian clear. With 1 or 2 more towers, the place could run some decent power at night, even if it had to stay in the upper end of the Class D limits; power output <250 watts or field strength at or <141 mV/meter. WLIM runs 500 watts at night, down from 10 kW, and WPGC runs 270 watts at night, down from 50 kW days. As long as Hammonton do what the other 2 do at night, it could make some headway. It would have to have a null toward Canada, as do the other two.

1580 WGYM could be brought up to snuff, with the currently authorized
power very cheaply. New transmitter ... less than $ 20,000.
Ground system repairs, maybe $ 6,000 or $ 8,000.
Studio equipment to get the job done ... $ 20,000
Rent a little studio in downtown Hammonton ... $ 1000 a month

Upgrading with more towers and power, etc is probably possible, but
not really practical. Keep it a local station and it can break even.
