According to Wikipedia, format flip in Midlands

Read it wrong. We stunted as Yes 99 running a 2 hour loop before debuting AAA at 5pm on St. Patrick's Day 2005. It was a fun way to burn the transmitter in, check coverage, watch reflected power, and continue to adjust audio processing prior to signing on. And, for all my fellow radio geeks, have a little fun with a reference to WYYS Cayce-Columbia, the original Digital 96.7 WYYS Yes 97.

Definitely much more fun than stunting with a reference to Stereo 93, WXRY.

We're not going anywhere. Phase II Winter had us in the pack with WTCB, WLTY and WWNU. Not too shabby considering our much lower ERP. WARQ was trailing us by about 45%.

So when or if are you guys going to get a full market signal or another translator? Also, with WARQ, wow, can they flip already? That is one awful sounding station. The morning crew is terrible and corny.

Probably 5-6 mil would probably net a signal or two if there were a willing seller. Broadcast trading has picked up, but prices are still depressed, which is good. The bad, there is at least one group in town that has got to be way underwater but won't sell for that reason.

As for translators, with the exception of Alex Snipe at Glory Communications, the licensed translators are all locked up as satellators for way out of state religious broadcasters.

There is no doubt that you could do a lot better with 92.1 or 94.3 than Miller & Double O are doing.

92.1 and 94.3 are Double O. Miller owns WSCZ Winnsboro @ 93.9. Harold's issue is that the projected coverage area is greater than actual. Format-wise, I think he is dead on. If he had a signal from the South and simulcast, he'd probably make a good dent in WCOS.

Mornings suck, the rest of the day isn't too bad. It's a constant mystery to me as to why they're rated so low.

Upsate, without giving anyone any free advice, WARQ is a complete mess musically and promotionally. Inner City has managed to drive both it and Fox 102 into the ground.

Since Inner City is the "Urban Specialist", I think Columbia could support a Rhy AC/classic hip-hop station. 93.5 would fit that bill.

Sorry I should have been more clear. I was talking about Tim Miller's fumbling and bumbling.

Wow, I love reading these posts. Never reply to them and I'm not sure why I am now. Give Tim credit where credit is due; he's taken 92's numbers back to where Charlie had them in 3 books. Not bad and, no, not sure if they'll stay that way. Harold has a huge signal (Not sure who you want this thing to reach) that covers Lake Murray, Wateree, Monticello and most of the outlying towns of Columbia, shy of Orangeburg. 93.9 is playing Country the way it should be played - for real country listeners. Lots of excitement with this audience.
Just seems to me that any local broadcaster that trys something daring or different gets bashed on this page. I been doing this for over 20 years, and yes, I will agree that Columbia is the worst Market it's size I've encountered.....but not because of the little guys. If I here "you can't do radio like it used to be" one more time..... There's nothing new under the sun, just those who care, those who don't, those who work and those who post.
Just waiting on information of value to be posted here....maybe that's the problem.

Althou you don't get the information you want in every read or post you do get a lot of good information and comments by many different kinds of people on these threads. I don't comment much on the Midlands as a whole since I live out in the country at one end of their signal ranges depending on stations. I can sometimes hear 93.9 here depending on the weather and I like their country format. We have been running the same kind of country format here on WLRE for 11 years now so I guess my opion is slightly leaned to one side but it is still my opion.

My apologies Gatekeeper, the comment was not aimed at you, or most everyone else in particular, for that matter. I am very familiar with WLRE, as you reside near my childhood home and first radio market. I believe we have met.

I feel that many posts, however, reflect the mindset of todays radio community: "Who can we bash today"," Who's down on their luck", "Here's what I would do if...." Since returning to South Carolina in 1996, I have seen this attitude towards radio WITHIN the organizations and feel that it is the main reason why so many stations in Columbia/Midlands fail to reach their potential.

I spent 6 years outside of South Carolina and I keep up with my previous market as well. Much more news and interest and a lot less "I told you so" there. Really miss the "Good ole' Days"; in both states.

Do any of you from Columbia ever listen to Greenville/Spartanburg radio? Trust me, it is WAY worse. I've heard Charleston radio, Columbia radio, and Augusta radio - all recently - and here, the choices are so limited and everyone is so set in their ways it is PATHETIC.

I would find it hard to believe Clear Channel, Citadel/Cumulus or Double O would generate any sympathy for being down on their luck.

No one wants to see their friends out of work. But if a competitor is badly mismanaged and slipping, that is how the business goes. Certainly you wouldn't see Fareed or Lowry Mays or Bob Sherman shedding any tears for you.

I actually like WARQ. I don't live in columbia, but when I go there, I think that it is a very good station. Much better than 93.3 the planet here in greenville. Also, why doesn't WARQ stream?

According to wikipedia, my high school has only had 4 notable alumni.
One is now an "HNIC" and another is a "pro baby maker."
So wikipedia might not always be that accurate. ;D
