Accurian HD Radio tried here in Australia

Hi all

One of my DX'er firends has bought an Accurian HD Radio, mainly for better analogue FM reception.

My Impressions?

1 - receiver nice small size but very cheap, plastic look.

2 - display hard to read unless looking straight on.

3 - RDS cannot display correct info the station's are transmitting (eg wrong PTY info).

3 - FM tuner very selective, could hear ABC Newsradio 103.9 from Canberra right next to our local 104.1 2DAY-FM here in Sydney with no splatter. Sensitivity good but not quite as good as my two FM tuners listed below.

4- receiver cannot handle strong RF input as well as receivers like my Onkyo Integra T-4650 or Pioneer Supertuner III-D. The antenna on the strata building has an RF distribution amp setup which means that FM signal input & ambient noise is incredibly high, despite being 40km away from Gore Hill/Atarmon (Sydney's main TX site).

We didn't really have time to try the AM side of it.

Cheers

Just to clarify, when trying the roof top antenna on the strata, the Accurian didn't suffer from overload & IMD products but simply couldn't resolve any DX signals through noise or local station's overlap like my Onkyo & Pioneer FM receivers can on this same antenna.

My Onkyo has been fitted w/ two 110k Murata filters for improved selectivity in the Narrow mode. Still uses 150k filters for the Wide position.

Do Australian stations use CENELAC PTY mappings, like the U.K.? The U.S. has a different set of mappings (per the RBDS spec). See "Table 1" toward the bottom of this page: http://www.rds.org.uk/rdsfrdsrbds.html. I bought a Roberts MW/SW/FM receiver in the U.K. and it works fine here in the U.S., except that the PTY code are mis-mapped. One of my local "Classic Rock" stations comes up as "DRAMA," and the National Public Radio station shows "PTY 22" instead of "PUBLIC."
