Accuweather back on KYW Newsradio

Accuweather, then make the change to weather reports to KYW-TV (Channel 3) meteorologists, then change to WCAU-TV (Channel 10) meteorologists, this morning weather updates are by Accuweather.

Everything old is new again?! I’m guessing the WCAU meteorologists are relieved they have one less task. Wonder if this is a corporate Audacy move.

Other former CBS radio, current Audacy all news stations in other cities never stopped using Accu-Weather. They’re back to doing what their sister stations never stopped doing.

I'm interested in the timing. KYW and NBC10 started teaming up in February 2020, so it's not like it was the end of a 3 year or 4 year contract. Just curious as to why the change now.

Not that it matters much either way!

Because it's less expensive, if not free. Accuweather retains inventory in the weather-guessing. Er, I mean report.

Actually, KCBS in San Francisco never used Accu-Weather. When KCBS uses an outside meteorologist, it's someone from KPIX.

KNX also does not use Accu-weather. They have a content agreement with CBS LA for weather reports, but when there is a big weather event, they have a contract with The Weather Channel's radio operation. Maybe the only Audacy all news station that uses The Weather Channel rather than Accuweather.

Agree - it was distinctive and caught the ear when I fumbled with the lightless radio in the middle of the night.
While certainly an outdated effect, it was part of the "brand." It wasn't hurting anything so I never understood why someone woke up one day and thought "We should get rid of that."

I am still hearing them use NBC10 for news content, just not weather forecasts anymore. I do wonder when there is a local weather emergency (eg hurricane warning) if KYW will simulcast NBC10’s live wall to wall weather coverage the way they’ve done previously

If the audience increasingly has no clue what that noise is, why keep it? “We always did” isn’t really a justification, it’s just clinging to the past.
Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

"Tradition is just bullying by dead people."

Just because it always was doesn't mean it will always have to be.

(Except for the Action News theme. People will revolt again if they every try to change it again)

I’m by no means suggesting they would be looking to change the theme anytime soon, but….that old story is coming up on three decades ago. And it was perhaps an odd choice for the reworking in the first place.

Regardless, that’s a lot of time to assume people would get bent out of shape in large numbers. The social media keyboard complainers, heck yes. But they’re not everyone…thank goodness. Just the loudest. There are people who would also just kind of accept that things change, and get on with their lives.
