Ace, TJ, and Smooth Jazz

Ace - I think he had more talent than Peter Chris

TJ - I'll still take Wal-Mart over TJ Max anyday

Smooth Jazz...vegas odds 600/1 to have greater than a .7

Yawn, Yawn & Big Yawn!

Ain't it great to be living in The South? Having Ace & TJ in town is damn near as good as having John Boy & Billy. Talkin' NASCAR... makin' fun of Yankees... lovin' that warm Charlotte weather!

W-Smo? That's catchy! "Smo 94.5?" Well, things have changed a lot in State College since the format pulled a smokin' 0.7 share in Fall 2002. Haven't they?

Sorry, but you just gotta wonder what these guys are thinking. On a sad note, though, both moves mark another big step away from local radio. No muss, no fuss; no work and no thinking involved. Just plug into the network and walk away. If this keeps up, there won't be any on-air jobs to be had in State College radio.

I agree. I believe that was exactly the problem with the old WOJZ. There is no reason for smooth jazz not to survive, and even be successful in State College. WSJW down in York/Harrisburg isn't pulling in stellar ratings, but they are holding their own, have a lot of local advertisements, and a lot of local promotions.

State College is an artsy and cultural little city, and if promoted properly, should do halfway decent. Let's just hope they give it more than two books chance. It was ridiculous how fast the plug was pulled on 'OJZ. People were just learning of the station's existence when it was pulled.

Ones & Twos

Yeah, smooth jazz lights up Harrisburg & York with shares in the 1 to 2 range. That should make all the competitors happy in State College! Forever gave it two full years last time and it shot all the way up to a 0.7 share. If Galli promotes the hell out of it--just like he promotes WOWY-- and gives it 5 or 6 years, it could get up into the 2 range, just like Hbg/York. Yes, SC is an artsy & cultural little city--that's why public radio kicks everybody's ass. The problem with SJ is that it's not high-brow enough! Real jazz fans think it's Easy Listening--which, of course, it is.

Well actually, if we really want to get into the science of the various 'forms' of smooth jazz, WSMO's is actually more artsy and cultural than WSJW's. Why? The satellite format WSMO uses has a much higher instrumental to vocal ratio than WSJW, a Broadcast Architecture consulted station. And the instrumentals the satellite plays are sometimes more rare and 'new age' sounding than the watered down motown sound of Broadcast Architecture smooth jazz. So in that case, having satellite smooth jazz may actually work in WSMO's benefit.

Re: Ones & Twos

In the real world, shares have nothing to do with sales in small markets. Results get buys...Dix Honda could care less if you have a 22 share and you don't move cars off his lot. (State College isn't leading the nation on national and regional buys) When HOT was #1 12+ - it was 6th in billing in the market. Smooth Jazz, like ESPN or most sports stations are sold for the format and bought for the same reason with ratings having NOTHING to do with the buy. I think Nick Galli might, just might know what he is doing. The same guy who LMAed K-Love and beat G101 and The Buzz 25-54 persons with zero, zip in promotions and then sold two signals to EMF for 2.5 million. He's counting his moeny while you spend time posting on Radio-Info.

Re: Yawn, Yawn & Big Yawn!

Well I decided not to post for various reasons as I have a biased outlook on Ace and TJ but what the hell I am gonna do it anyway.

State College is actually the number 4 market for Ace And TJ behind Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, and Chattanooga. (According to Emails And Phone Calls) So obviously somebody or somebodies think it is worth the air time. We have a great response to the show from both Men and Woman and I am very anxious to see how well they rank up with other morning shows in the area come ratings time.

Thanks for your time.
