Ace & TJ Have Left the Building

According to AllAccess.com - After 13 years, today was Ace & TJ's last show on Kiss 95.1 WNKS. They turned down a new deal and were unable to come to terms on a new agreement, according to OM/PD John Reynolds.

Wow!  They've done a helluva job for KISS and I wish them well.  And I don't think I'd like to be answering the phones next week at KISS.

Ace and TJ claim that they have a non-compete and will not entertain offers until December when the non-compete is up.  Clear Channel, however, is reportedly providing them with a studio so that they can continue to provide 3 CC stations with a morning show.  I wonder if their recent trip to Birmingham to visit with their affiliate, a CC station, had anything to do with them being so willing to walk out on the KISS offer. Will we hear them on 96.1 beginning in December or January?  Hmmmm! Wouldn't surprise me!

Kind of reminds me of when CC's KAT Country pulled Paul Schadt away from his longtime perch at CBS's WSOC several years back.

Leave it to the clowns running that operation. One of the great radio shows in the area and you're going to let them walk out after 13 years...what were you thinking? Someone from New York should take a real close look at whom or what is running their Charlotte operation. It's quite clear they haven't a clue on how to fully operate.

The world is ending tonight at 6pm anyway, so does it really matter? ;-)

@radioguy in reverse: CC also lured Skip Mahaffey away from CBS' WQYK in Tampa for their then-upstart "US 103.5" country station; he is no longer there at this time.

More on Ace & TJ "going all in" from Mark Washburn:

Reading the comments at the bottom of Mark Washburn's article makes me glad I'm not on the radio anymore. Some really awful stuff. I didn't listen to Ace and TJ but I give them credit for holding down the morning show for 13 years. That's not easy!

agreed. CBS Charlotte also did not renew Packman's contract on WFNZ which was not a wise move either.

A&TJ on Channel 96.1 almost makes sense to me.

Clear Channel carries them on several of their stations and are going to keep them on, for now at least. Why not give Channel a local morning show, and continue to syndicate it to the other markets? Might help their ratings, also. I've wondered if Ch.'s morning show is bringing them down more - it isn't doing great in Chicago, where it's syndicated from.

I'll make my official prediction that Scotty Davis will be the new morning host at Kiss. He recently left his morning perch at WNOU in Indianapolis and spent time at KDWB doing afternoons prior to that.

Ace & TJ? If they're already doing their syndicated show from the CC complex, I'd say they end up on either 961 or 1029 come December.

If anything Ace&TJ will be on Lite 102.9 come January. Really look at it, most of thier demographic is 25-54. It's going to a rough road for WNKS until they get a morning show.

Should KISS 95.1 have kept Ace & TJ? I think they are a little old for the CHR format. They would be good for mornings on sister station K 104.7, but is talks with CBS Radio out of the question?

I doubt they'd be on another CBS station since they couldn't get together with them to stay on Kiss. IMO, the show would fit well on a Hot AC format with some re-tooling.

I think the show will wind up at one of the Clear Channel stations, definitely - I say 96.1, because they need a ratings boost more than 102.9, and there is a lot more familiarity with Ace & TJ with the Channel audience.

The thing is you're talking to the exact same "people".

Money is always the issue and with CBS (and other corporate radio giants) it is the only issue! Ace & TJ had a great run and they will continue.

Don't count out CBS stations as affiliates. That is a lot cheaper way to go!

What made Ace & TJ and CBS not agree to a new contract? I would have to say money had to be a issue.

Ace and TJ on their show claim it had nothing to do with money and supposedly, they were willing to work for less money. Of course, that's only their side of the story, but they seem to indicate that they wanted more control over the show.
