You know, it feels real good when you achieve goals which I've done here at KSKO recently.
One of my goals, as stated in my interview in September 2020 was to post some kind of "online update", like a brief look at weather and important community info every morning. It took the Spring flood happening this year, 1 1/2 years after I got here.. to see it's needed, wanted and the flood showed me how to make it work. Think of a lightbulb/viola moment all in one. Check out the KSKO Public Radio 89.5 FM facebook page for details on what I'm talking about.
Shortly after arriving here, I figured out that programming for young children, teens and 20 somethings was severely lacking. I wanted to give them a reason to listen to the radio while making sure mom and dad were comfortable with what they were listening to and would even enjoy it with them.
To that end, I carry KIDJAM Radios 24/7 kid friendly parent approved music format 2-3 hours a day 3 days a week from WAPS 91.3 HD3 Akron, OH. I will also be picking up a 1 hour show thats nothing but the hottest music from the last 6 months. And finally, what really clenched meeting this young kids/teens/20s programming goal was The Childrens Hour,, think of it as a cross between kid friendly music and All Things Considered for kids.. we start airing it this upcoming week.
I'm the only full time staff member here and the trust placed in me is awesome, empowering and inspiring. I get to do and try things here I wouldn't elsewhere.
KSKO's mission is to inform and entertain, which I'm allowed to do how I see fit.. and it seems to be working out well. Almost everything I do gets quite the bit of positive reaction. I love my job and my listeners tell me they can tell that..
Some days are quite the challenge here when I have to wade through knee deep snow to brush out a satellite dish or something, but its a challenge.. the kinda challenge I can usually meet and beat.
