Action News 40th Anniversary Coming Up in April 2010

I don't know how many people know this or care, but I would like to mention that April 6, 2010 will mark the 40th anniversary of Action News in Philadelphia. As for my thoughts of what their possible plans are, I think that WPVI ought to celebrate by bringing back past favorites like Marc Howard, Joe Pellegrino, Chris Wagner, Don Tollefson and the founding anchorman Larry Kane to do special reunion newscasts alongside Jim Gardner, Dave Roberts and the rest of the current team.

Not gonna happen, and there's really no need to stage a stunt like that.

I'm not sure about them actually anchoring the news, but it would be neat if they interviewed some of the past talent.

Stop the presses. I mean come on, why are people in Philly so caught up on the past. Who cares if a certain format of news has been on TV since forever. What is the big deal? Perhaps the only people that care visit this message board. Practically no one under 20 watches broadcast TV let alone local news, and that covers half of the 40 year period.

Under 20, so you mean the people that live at home with mommy and daddy, who pay the cable bill for them? I guess your right, my 5 year old likes to watch her Nick, Nick Jr., Disney, and Sprout, all cable channels.

It's not going to have something to do with an "anniversary" that far in the future, particularly when Gardner has been on the lead shows longer than Roberts.

It really can't be that big a mystery what's to come.

Action News Channel 6 style was the next phase for Philly TV news after the eras of John Fasenda (ch10), Gunner Back (ch6), and Vince Leonard (ch3). They were the standards for the previous generation.

Action News became the new standard to beat. If what I've read is correct, Action News has been on top almost since it's introduction to Philly TV. So from a broadcast point of view, a news gathering point of view, a commerically successful point of view, yes there's a lot for WPVI to celebrate with the 40th anniversary of Channel 6 Action News.

There's plenty for them to celebrate, but what makes sense to celebrate and how to celebrate it internally and externally are wildly different things.

I could see them doing a half hour special about Philly's Action News (they'll probably try to milk an hour out of it but 30 minutes to me would be about right), using old film footage of the big moments at Action News with the early newscasters and the far younger versions of Jim, Dave, etc.

I doubt ch.6 is going to bring back the old folks to co-host or even reminese about the old days as that might be interesting to us here at RI, but the general public doesn't really care.

As far as how ch 6 would celebrate internally within their company, who cares? I'm sure they'll do some celebrating though as it is a major milestone.

I can see them bring Dave Roberts back, as he will be a recent departure, As for the other alumni that has since moved on to other markets, I agree. You won't be seeing Chris Wagner, Robin Garrison, ect come back for a reunion show. Probably something about Jim O'Brien, but thats even if ch6 did do something. I doubt they will.

I don't think for a moment there will be a stand-alone special about Action News hitting 40. Maybe, maybe a mention on the daily newscasts, but not a separate special.

Personally, I think it would be a great idea if for the month of April they were to do a "Action News Video Vault" segment during the 5 p.m. show...where they would "open the vault" of a particularly interesting news story covered at the time--then--do an update to that story today (if there was one to tell). So, for example--they might show the story of the day of the opening of I-476 between Macdade Blvd in Delaware county and I-76 in Montgomery county...Does anyone else not think this would be a fun segment to see for the month?

I think maybe they might have a quick little story about it before weather. It would be the normal flash abunch of old clips while whatever reporter is doing the story talks over, then maybe a quick mention of a few names. Thats as good as I think we will get.

Of coarse we could always contact ch6 with ideas, and maybe if they see there is some interest they will do something. Ok cue Julius Mays with 6abc contact links.

How about exclusively on 6abc.com?

Do you mean a stand-alone long-form program on the Web? No, not worth it. If they did a quick mention on air, sure, put it up and maybe add some extra footage if you've already been combing through.

No time for any of this as they must work in promos of the new ABC show "Dancing with Cougars who Survived the Amazing Race with their Big Brothers and swapped wives"
