Action News from Noon to 6:30PM???

With the possibility of ABC canceling two of its current soap operas (One Life to Live and All My Children) and with Action News replacing Oprah at 4 pm when her show ends, are we that far off from a time when Action News will run from noon until ABC’s World News?

Just a thought…..

I haven't seen any announcements yet but I have no doubt ABC and/or its syndication arm will find something to fill the time. Before WFIL-TV/WPVI and the network were under the same ownership, they could (and did) frequently opt out of network programming. Except for special circumstances, they no longer have that luxury.

6ABC/ABC6 used to be one of the more ambitious stations for local programming. Not any more. They are doing nothing with their digital sub-channels - even to the point of running the same programming (mostly informercials) on both sub-channels.

All news TV could work in Philly. Channels in other markets (NY1, LI12 and NJ12) do well. NBC10 claims to be doing a news channel (sort of) on one of their sub-channels, although it's far from true local-live all news channel. Given union restrictions, the cost for one of the network affiliates to do all news might be prohibitive but cheap little-station-that-could kind of operation on cable could be run profitably (as it has in other major markets).

Canceling the soaps, if it happens, doesn't mean giving the time back to the stations. Moreover, it's not as if they expanded Action News when they got the 12:30 slot back. 4 pm is a common--now--time for local news. 2 pm? Not so much, and not likely in the near future.

And if more newscasts are the new definition of local content..as compared to AM Philadelphia or Dialing for Dollars, I'll take the newscasts.

Infomercials would be more likely. However, I think Ch.10 would do it first in terms a 1 or 2 hour daytime block of just infomercials.

Ch.10 already tested infomercials last year or the prior year, at 12:30pm, following "Deal or No Deal", but now airs reruns of Real Housewives (reality show) from 2006. Oddly 10 decided to go with reruns of that show over "Access Hollywood Live".

And channel 6's history of daytime informercials is...nil.

IF the time went back to the stations--again, not the scenario--they would drop in syndicated fare before informercials. Channel 10 is its own case. Speaking of 10, not terribly odd--the network O&O group put the Housewives franchise on, and if the 10 show weren't there, they might well have Access Hollywood Live on top of it.

The LAST type of programming we need in this country is more local TV newscasts and the continuation of the dumbing down of America. Please cut, NOT expand. Heck, even some infomercials have higher quality content than many local newscasts.

And under a radical new system, the viewers will decide if it's "enough" by voting with their remotes. Then the advertisers will decide if there's an audience there they're willing to pay to reach. What a concept. :D

Meanwhile, those with a personal grudge to nurse can stew in their juices. :)

No personal grudge here as I have media institutions paying me a generous monthly stipend for my work, simply speaking the truth about how bad local TV news is both in Philly and around the country, and what's so funny about the baseless claims that a certain poster throws against the wall to see if they will stick is that the poster, or should I say impostor, HAS NO CLUE WHATSOEVER about me, my profession, or my colleagues in the media business both in Philly and other markets. This impostor must obviously work in the TV business because of the degree of defense of the industry as the best thing since sliced bread, but the impostor can not handle the truth, and that's pathetic.

What's also funny, or sad actually, is that some of my closest colleagues/friends in local TV news have become so disenchanted with the medium that they first signed up for because they thought it was a "worthy profession" or they "always wanted to be in front of a camera or behind the scenes in a bustling newsroom environment," now sadly simply march along because they continue to be paid well above average wages and don't feel like looking for a new job in this economy, or self-admit they are too lazy to look for a new career. Many can't stand the shop management they work for and some even admit to me they feel like they're "stealing" money from a hollow enterprise but are too scared to post those feelings on message boards as I do because they simply don't have the nerve. I don't care because I am fortunate to have other income sources and if I don't continue to spend some of my professional time in the media business so be it. But even involved in the business, the fact remains that local TV news is the continued dumbing down of America and insulting to logical people's intelligence. That's just the way it is. Horrible, horrible programming.

Others don't agree with me, and I could care less. Have fun whiling away your hours in front of the tube being insulted if that's what makes your boat rock.

You can vote all you want by turning your remote, but unless you are a Nielsen family your vote won't count. And even if you are a Nielsen Family if your remote is off too much, you no longer will be a Nielsen family.

More court shows are the likely outcome

More than the zero they carry? What makes court shows likely when they've shown no inclination towards them thus far in how many years?

Based on what I have heard over the weekend, I'd be very surprised if All My Children or One Life to Live get the ax. Soap fans have been playing this dance for a while.

ABC is definitely invested in General Hospital. They spent a large amount of money to build some permanent sets on the soundstage where GH is taped. Even if the other two soaps were cancelled, I doubt GH would disappear anytime soon.

Both gone! One in September and the other next January. A food show and a talk/variety show will replace them. No extra Action News programming yet. When is Oprah done?

i give ch 6 news at 4pm until the end of august until they replace it with some type of cooking show or talk show

I think Ch.6 will be successful with news at 4pm. KYW would likely move Dr.Phil to 4pm, leaving it just a Ch.6 vs. Ch.10 newsrace at 4pm.

News at 4 can attract audiences, with the simple formula of weather and traffic, info on activity in the city, at the Shore, Poconos, some health advice, consumer advice, and a little light stuff.

Oprah's last show is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25th. The new 4 pm Action News debuts
the next day(Thursday, May 26th).
