active/alternative will a new player enter the arena

if ysp drops weekend music, does anyone think there will be a flip to active, alternative or some brand of hard rock popping up on one of the area stations. this metro has 10 million listeners, how can there only be one rocker that caters to an older audiance (mmr). don't you think a rock format from a local or a rim shot should be considered and launched, and will it eventually happen. Urban is all over the dial with little of anything else, one urban should make the switch, is 96.5 ripe for the picking or jbr, something to consider.

i say kill 98.9 (the worst of them all), make it Rock, like WMMR, just not quite as kick ass, i still want MMR to be the king now that 97.5 Is Gone., but i bet my life that in another yeaqr of so, there will be at least 2 or more rap channels, im afraid of the day MMR is no more (probably will never happen), that would the end of rock radio right there.

It is a shame that you have to flip to an AM station to listen to real alternative music. With that being said. There will never be an alternative FM station in Philadelphia.

Wow, what a sales pitch.

*snort* You beat me to it!

I can hear the legal ID's now.... 98.9 The Buzz... WUSL Philadelphia... A Clear Channel tax write-off... er.. radio station.

Power 99 has ratings and sales, they're fine, and not going anywhere anytime soon. I agree, I think there may actually be some stability in Philadelphia for a little bit. I'd only keep my eyes on WYSP to see if they tweak some... Wired to see if the towel is ever thrown in (I have no clue on their sales numbers... so they could be fine.), it's too early to kill My 106.1 or Rumba 104.5.... and I think the Beat/Praise/WRNB are all safe for the only reason that they're owned by Radio One.

Of course, anything could happen.. this IS radio.

Clear Channel really blew a golden opportunity to grab a nice piece of the younger male demographic when they took 104.5 spanish instead of active or alternative rock. Now, they have to ride that decision out to see how low she'll go. I still maintain that this market is not hispanic enough to support a full-market FM signal and something will eventually have to give.

They need to stick with My 106.1 for a while too, to give time for the female demo to discover the station. That one is a harder call at the moment.

None of the urbans are going anywhere at the moment - all do okay. And, I was under the impression that 96.5 was actually showing some improvement (at the expense of Q102).

As said above, it looks like things may be stable in the market for a while.

DCRTV.com reporting R1 to sell?

Not to stoke the flames, but...

As recently as a week or two ago, DCRTV had been following a story that Radio One was thinking of, or discussing, selling some of their properties. Out of the cities mentioned that they would keep, Philly wasn't one of them. Of course, the story has been moved to their archives, which requires a paid subscription.

IIRC, the author/webmaster of DCRTV, Dave Hughes, does cruise these boards, perhaps he can jump in here and shed some light on this. Perhaps, I misread his words, but something made the blurbs stick out in my mind.

The downside of this is they recently purchased a station in DC and flipped it to gospel as "Praise 104.1" (the station, once owned by Bonneville, was most recently adult hits "George", then the last over the air home of WGMS, and then Z-104). So, who knows? As they say "STAY TUNED"

Its ashame.. but no one want to run active/alt rock anymore... WYSP should go back to the tunes.. The branding of that station is atrocious and its 25+years as a heritage FM rocker is something you can't just trash... Infinity was nuts for tossing that all aside, they can correct it by bringing the music back to 'YSP.. IMHO...

you'd have to think that by the fall they will either go all hot talk or switch to all music ... especially with the recent statement that the new CBS Radio CEO is going to let stations have more autonomy ...

Agreed. As I posted in another thread, the Free FM concept is in trouble. The absolute smartest thing that CBS radio could do is to return WYSP back to the rock format that they had before this hideous 'Free FM' experiment. Eagles games will still work just fine on a rocker.

BRNout, this is the one time i agree with you, ditch the Free FM crapola and bring the mainstream/active rock format back, also i noticed that during the weekend they dont play too much old stuff anymore, they need to go back to the way they were before, they were fine, and that goes for 92.3 in NYC as well, except WFNY still plays the Classic Rock stuff, wich is the way it should be
