active rock

Does anyone think either the palm beach market or the miami market will ever have an active rocker again. I know the palm beach market seems to be short of frequencies that can be flipped

Nope.

You'll probably find a blizzard in Broward before they flip a station to rock. Especially in Miami/Ft Lauderdale. There are several viable formats that would need to be seriously considered before a flip to the same burnt-out rock that Buzz/93Rock/Zeta played in the past 10 years.

Even the "different" rock formats would likely tank. The really cool alternative stations that are heavy on the 90's alt and even the active rockers that actually throw some heavy metal in have little chance of survival there. Maybe AAA/AC hybrid like WMMO could have some viability and pluck a share or two from Lite or The Coast, but SHE sorta has that covered in a way.

Also realize that many of the "new rock" listeners have strayed away from radio and now get their music from streaming or a personal collection that would take a milk crate full of CD's to rival.

Also, as mentioned several times before here, the demographics don't support a rocker in either market really, but especially Miami. Since active rockers predominantly cater to younger white males, you are going to have to fight for the 6-7% of the population in Dade + Broward that fit those criteria. And you'll be up against several sports stations, a couple of CHR's, a classic rocker, country, online streaming radio, and personal music collections!

WKPX has an excellent alternative/punk format during the day last time I checked. And they have a CP for 25kw that will have no problems covering most the populated areas of Broward with a city-grade signal. Nova Southeastern runs it as "Radio X" during the night and their format is more college radio-ish but definitely leans rock. Honestly, something wouldn't surprise me if NSU buys that station outright and just contractually allows the Broward School Board Meeting broadcasts as a "public service". Last time I checked, Broward County Schools are in iffy shape financially and a nice 7-digit sum might permit them to part with the station so long as the school board can continue broadcasting just like Dade does with WLRN (except Dade County Schools still holds the license for the station)

you would think the palm beaches and treasure coast market would support one. Or maybe 98.7 and 105.9 will morph into more of a rock station that mixes classic with 90's rock

Big 1059 does play some 90s rock (Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Chili Peppers/Stone Temple Pilots) but they aren't really into it. SHE 103.5 plays a lot more than BIG does.

What a horrible radio market S Florida has become for rock n' roll

South Florida has never been a market for rock leaning formats.

Most successful stations have always been pop or rhythmic leaning.

Growing up for example, we never heard groups or artists like Journey or Van Halen in heavy rotation.

I don't see that changing.

Well, that's crap.
There was a time that the dial had rock all across it.
WSHE, WCKO, WINZ FM ( Zeta 4), and before that, WBUS, and those were just the successful ones.
South Florida has been unlucky in the programming and ownership decisions.
There's enough people from The Palm Beaches to the keys and inland to support just about any format.
To look at the ethnic makeup and say that contemporary rock, and AAA cannot make it, is just narrow minded

They had a loyal following. The ratings were marginal.

Is there such a thing as "passive rock"? :D
Music with which to take your shoes off, relax, have some warm milk, crank up the volume, and R O C K
Actually, I might direct you to SiriusXM's "The Coffee House" and "The Loft" channels, lots of laid back acoustic stuff, but within the Rock neighborhood.

Norm is right! South Florida isn't dead, it's a vibrant and very diverse market. Surely there is an audience for a great active rocker. Never say never, what goes around comes around.

I'm still young enough and optimistic we will get an active rocker. Long live rock!

You have to look at all these stations mentioned. With the exception of 93Rock and the Buzz which was in a much more "active rock friendly" market, they have all disappeared before the advent of online streaming on cell phones and satellite radio. I'm not saying every person who listens to active rock streams, but they have mp3 players that have bigger libraries than most of the stations we have brought up. Why is it that both of these markets still have classic rockers but no modern rockers? It's because people under 35 have found different sources of music! Many of them have relegated radio to the dung heap of media!

Another issue is sellability. I'm very sure Zeta/93Rock/Buzz made OK money right up until the last commercial, but hell...WKIS has traditionally had awful ratings, but they make better money than any of these stations because not only is their product more unique, but it is easier to sell to the average business! With modern rock, well over half their library is duplicated by CHR, Hot AC, Adult Hits, or Classic Rock stations.

AND if you are a business owner looking at spending cash on radio ads, would you spend the same amount of $$ to advertise on KIS where you get a wide range of listeners who are frequently well-off transplants, or advertise on 93Rock where you advertise to people A) too cheap/poor for streaming radio on cells, or B) are on the aging range of the modern rock demos? Unless youre a skate/surf shop, strip club, bar, or music hall, I know which one 90% of businesses are going to go to!

So on that end, case closed. However, translators may be breathing a bit more life into the dying world of radio, so don't be surprised if the format hops on over to there as it has in Raleigh/Durham.

How come all the UM kids who enter my cab say,"put on ninety this or one hundred that"?
They get totally confused when I tell them I don't do fractional terrestrial radio: nothing after the decimal point in this taxi.

Back in the day, and we are talking the 80's here, WSHE was top 5 25-54 Adults and #1 with Men. Not saying Rock could ever do that again, but there is a hole. Maybe the 4th or 5th ranked Spanish language station should give it a go.

With the demos in Mia Ft L Market. . You will never see a top 5 rock station. Sorry wishful thinking. I would like to see a smooth Jazz or jammin! Oldies station In the top 5 too, but I know that is not going to happen.
