adam 12's replacement:

WEDG might consider Val Townshend. She sounds like a fish out of water doing the AC format on WHTT, but she always sounded into it on The Edge.

Yeah, originally I thought Val could nail the Hot-AC-ish format of Mix, but there is some apprehension as she reads liner after liner on The Mix.

There are more than a few people who expected better and are equally surprised. She seems to mail it in. Maybe she's doing other things. Who knows. Afternoon drive used to be a prestigious daypart. If she went back to The Edge, at least she wouldn't have to worry about missing weather forecasts.

What are thoughts about Sue Oneill doing 2p-4p in an attempt to hold office listening.

The Entercom intelligencia say O'Neill wasn't thrilled to go back on the air, but had little choice in the matter. Apparently, after a few weeks, she told people she relished the thought of competing with "another woman" and typical of O'Neil, told anybody who'd listen she'd "show Val how it's supposed to be done." Chicks...

Regarding Adam-12...... who's heard that he's asked to leave shortly before bills season starts?

A guy from Clear Channel Rochester who's know Adam since he board-op'd at WHAM was heard to say that this move was all Adam's. He got the offer to go to North Carolina, more dough, better overall station and Assistant PD.

Interesting thread unfolding here.

Okay so we've established the disdain for the job Val is doing on Mix 104.1, but back to the issue of the thread, who does everyone think would replace Adam12? Can anyone on the Edge staff fill the slot in your eyes? The only suggestion was The J & J show... (which was hilarious by the way...) but any ideas?

For the record, Val Townshend is one of the best (female) production voices in the market, so it's not a matter of disdain. She'll be in a bigger market very soon. People here expected her to sound better at WHTT based on what she did on the air at The Edge. I guess doing AC isn't a cakewalk. Nothing personal. As to Adam 12's replacement, there's likely somebody already in-house... part timers at The Edge and 97 Rock who would fit in. If Citadel wanted to cut corners, they could move one of those part-timers to the Edge. They could also go with a competent fulltime replacement like Tyler Banks or Paul Brennan. Either one would sound good.

my ringing endorsements:

paul brennan.
Has done his time,(late nite) and polished his skills.

runners up/top 3:

- josh potter. yes, seriously, he currently is a great talent with a STRONG supporting cast;
but, has PROVEN himself, on the next new wave show. that, i believe is a 3-hr show, and
he is just *NOT* front/back selling ( that was this edge artist, and that edge artist) he actually
provides insight to the bands, and does so w/ a great command of the language...he would
get my top vote. (him, or evil gym,lol - but i DOUBT he wants PD-responsibilities and a night shift ).

-shannon speaker.

-"shades" (although, his 'niche' direction to the audience about wrestling, needs to be addressed).
besides that, he is a great talent, but again - he feels every one is following his lead...lol. i enjoy
wrestling, and he loses me sometimes.

-tyler banks, is great( a shoe-in, perhaps) but since his show is almost always voice tracked, what is the harm
if it airs at 3am, or 10pm. he is busy, as the hardest working guy ..putting the motion,
in promotion!

E-Val-uation

I don't see Val moving to a bigger market soon. She has a very good production voice, but her air work at Mix 104.1 indicates that she hasn't got the chops to make the move to a larger market. Missing weather forecasts, and hearing top-of-the-hour beds running with no VO are indications that she's just not interested. I don't think that she has the discipline to do the job here, let alone in a bigger market.

As far as a return to The Edge is concerned, we're talking about a serious demotion from PM drive to 7PM-12Mid. A return to the "bad girl/sex kitten" persona on The Edge would not be career progress in my opinion. She either needs to get her act together on Mix, or forget about live on-air altogether.

As far as production is concerned, she can do that anywhere, and ship it anywhere via the Internet. Doesn't she also teach part-time at a local college? That's more likely her long-term strategy, not broadcasting. It's just too bad that she's not putting forth a real effort on-air at Mix.

"de-val-u"

perhaps, she "doesnt" want to be back-selling the "current" mix-artists....

and, instead :
wants to be the sex kitten @ the edge, pluggin the hell outta top-billed,edge concert!!

seriously, if it were up to her, i personally believe, she would take the "de-motion" as you put it,
( that is typed, with all the respect in the world for u , rox-a-lot) and , be back "home" at 103.3
being able to be "VAL" - not the VAL-ium, on 104.1

if she misses a weather break, on the edge, most listeners, wont notice; i think 104.1 has a
serious on-aire presentation, and if her bed of music, runs out, on 103.3 NO ONE will care;
versus 104.1 where people are actually sober enough to be able the difference between
the live-jock, commercials and music.

i think, this is not said, in a bad way, is a nice fit for 103

All dudes, all the time?

While J Potter and Tyler can certainly hold their own on 7p-12a, perhaps it's just good for business that they bring in a female jock at night or do some shuffling. Nights traditionally is where ratings just plummet after drive time listening. But the artist formerly known as "the eternal one" held it together and pulled off the naughty girl act quite well.

Havent heard Shannon, but from what I have, she's pretty decent but all over the place. Even on the "edge", you have to manage chaos and make it sound like it's thrown together, which "slick tom" puts together better than most.

Op, don't take the following personally. It's a response to the attitude I'm seeing from a lot of young people, both in the business and outside of it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is precisely the attitude that separates the hacks from the pros.

I don't know whether Val made the move from The Edge to Mix at her own request or not, but the fact is that she's there. It's a real, grown-up radio station. There are lots of people on Mix - and other AC stations - who work the same format, plug the same concerts, and manage to make their presentation a lot more entertaining, while actually doing the weather over the weather bed. They're timely and relatable - meaning that they insert today's hot topics into their transitions between music and liners. They have a focus on the audience and talk about things that are import to that audience.

Bad Girl/Sex kitten is easy if that's how you handle people in real life, but it's a lot less cute once you get out of college and get into the real world. Being a relatable jock - especially to an audience with interests different from your own - requires work, show prep, and concentration. Pros do the work and make the show sound good no matter what the format is. Backselling songs and reading liners is kid's stuff. It's the transitions from element to element - and making those elements informative and/or entertaining for the audience - that separates the kids from the pros.

Missing weather forecasts and/or letting music beds play with no VO is unacceptable ANYWHERE. Period.

If Val wants to go back to The Edge, fine. In the meantime, she's on Mix, and she needs to do the job to the best of her ability. That's not what I'm hearing. The difference between Val and Valium is up to Val - not the format. Listen to Sue O'Neil. She's much better right now in a similar structure.

In closing, let me offer this word of advice:

If you take the paycheck, DO THE JOB. If you don't like the job, either suck it up or quit. Find a job that you like. Otherwise, you're just embarassing yourself, and cheating both your employer and the other people that you work with.

siRRox:

nothing taken personally, Sir.
In fact, those words ( in your post- nail it!) but there is some thing
about, say if u "force" a hip-25 year old, to work at 94.5 FM - there
may be a lack of passion.

but hey, rox- u and i,
we're still good...As always, i enjoy to to hear your take on ALOT about radio,
wish u would email more...provide me w/ bonus coverage!! ha,ha.

i look forward, to see a reply, with your name tag next to it!

yes, "eternal one" pulled it off, as i recall, so did 'kit missle' ! (hmmm...)
perhaps, an unusual pick, may be just what they need...

how about , yet another duo,
on-paper, "bad idea" but lets think, what 2 citadel employees, ( available for eve's) may pull it off....

*i agree, sue O. is a radio pro!

sir Rox:
a duo in the evening, is that too crazy, even for the edge?

Heavy applause from me. Back when I was a "baby DJ" one of my programming idols was Scott Shannon. In an interview q&a with him he said, and I have to paraphrase because it was a long time ago: "if radio is like work for you, you're in the wrong business". What he was saying is that you have to live it and bring your passion for it with you. Otherwise you are just punching a time-clock and you won't last.

That's too crazy, even for The Edge. There's not enough income in 7-Midnight to justify two salaries.

It would be interesting if The Edge decided to turn the 7-Midnight race into an on-air competition. Put each of the candidates on for a week, and let the audience vote for their favorite. They could turn it into a real promotional opportunity. The final selection would, of course, be up to the station...

Shades of the Great American Talent Hunt at KB following Jack Armstrong's departure. The audience voted for "The Janitor." Jeff Kaye wanted Shane. After a disastrous three months, the Janitor was exiled to wherever he went next and Shane went on to become one of this area's legendary announcers. Now back to our discussion of Adam 12's replacement....

Presentation:

I thought of typing some thing, like a "who wants to be the next evening edge jock"
...but, i thought I would be laughed off the board, ha,ha.

Snice, roxxy typed it, it seemed to have more respect... ( am i thaaaat goofy? )
-hmmm-maybe, even tie into a "local" (fox-29?, channel 7?) who wants to be the next nightly sensation?

i agree, even for the edge, another duo!? would be a bad idea, but...
what about some one (off the wall) like the angry hero? or... some one from another
citadel market to move up (or settle down) into buffalo ?

-I personally would like to see a very creative 7pm - 12midnite broadcast "experience"
...some thing, not just playing and naming the same dozen or so songs...

almost a speciality show, nightly....say the metal shop on mondays,
(nothing like the sunday metal show, but "radio-friendly" rock hits)...and,
same applies to tues,wed...etc.etc.

-only trouble getting back to the original question, who would host it?-

does this forum, agree or disagree, "stealing" a jock, would be some thing
favorable for 103.3 the edge?
(say, trying to land, mike benson, from 97.7 *FOR EXAMPLE* )
or...an in-house 'switch' from the existing payroll, a good idea?

Spearfish... he went to Spearfish... as in South Dakota.

Warren Miller was a very decent guy. A participant in The Great American Talent Hunt, coming from WLOF, Orlando (how ironic that the call letters are now assigned to a Buffalo rimshot FM on 101.7) he probably was overwhelmed and uncertain from the first day he walked into the 1430 Main Street building. Imagine: The PD is the legendary Jeff Kaye who wanted to hire The Greaseman, but was budgetarily thwarted. The shadow of Jackson Armstrong looms large... there's 50kW and nowhere to hide.

Spearfish... amazing!

Spearfish Walker - Hey, there's a radio name...

Mike,

Did you know that Spearfish, SD is known as "The Queen City"? Check it out http://city.spearfish.sd.us/"]here[/url]...

So, The Janitor went from one "Queen City" to another...

There's no way that The Edge is going to pay Benson enough to leave 97.7 - if he was interested. He's doing morning drive there. Why on earth would he leave that to go to 7-Mid at The Edge?

If you're looking outside the confines of James E. Casey Drive, an interesting thought might be Donny Walker. Yeah, he's been a CHR jock for a long time, but I wouldn't be surprised that his musical taste might be closer to The Edge. He can't be raking in big dough for VT at Wild/Z. He has a name in the marketplace, and might be motivated to stick it to Entercom.

Walker ?
when kiss was thee "station!" , he had the passion to be there...
now, i dont see him, "fitting into the" edge; with what they are right now.
-Persona, and pipes, he still has "got it" but...the drive for it, well i
think he wants to be some where else...where ? no idea.
plus, i personally believe he would turn it down...unless, the offer
was too good 2be true.

within citadel:
that mikey-mike, movie-reviews, he seems like an excellent choice.

outside citadel:
w/in the buffalo market,

-jim mcgee(-x-92.9/?97 rock?)

-dan ranelli (?sp) / current?/former entercomm employee.

-shotman ( formely of 2 or three 92/9's fm formats).

-do u think mr clay, wyrk mornings, would do it?

-female talent: claire jordan.(entercomm) she would "live, and breathe" the format...i personally believe
'edge-artists' is what she would enjoy (concerts, current music-add's per week, etc )

- once went by the name/alias: chris kent, former WNUC/107.7 and ?/former CBS/Regent employee...(?/former,current) uncertain,
at the time of this writing.

- jill daniels ( regent-broadcasting)/wyrk ...she seems likeable enough to have a shot at the eve_edge shift.

*ANy thoUGHTS* of any one being 'shipped' in from Citadel/rochester, or citadel-syracuse....

-or,
how likely is this?
some shifting around: and create a 9-3pm slot _____ perhaps, moving bull to the eve shift.
