Adam Carolla Replacing Stern At Live 105?

After starting his show today with a one-hour broadcast that had a David Lee Roth impersonator sitting in as his replacement at WXRK/New York, Howard Stern dropped several hints today that the real David Lee Roth will actually be his replacement at the station (and perhaps several others), while mentioning that Adam Carolla will be replacing him in four or five markets, including Los Angeles and San Diego.

When asked by Robin Quivers whether San Francisco was one of the markets Carolla would be taking over, Stern hesitated, saying, "I don't know. I don't remember ... Maybe."

Stern continues to press for a September release from his contract with CBS/Infinity in advance of his January 2006 move to Sirius satellite radio. Rumors that this might actually take place gained momentum with today's hints by Stern and whispers from within Infinity that the company might find selling advertising spots easier going into next year without basing ad prices on Stern's ratings in Fall.

More here and here.

Better Carolla than Roth -- I can't imagine DLR being any good at doing a morning radio show 5 days a week. That's a disaster in the making, IMHO. Carolla, on the other hand, is a seasoned radio vet at this point.

Where is our guy who claimed that the Doghouse would be taking over for Stern on KITS in July?

The scary thing for anyone that listened to the first hour of Stern today is that the fake DLR is probably better than the real DLR will be when he gets a show.

The way I figure, there will be some Classic Rock stations out in the heartland that will think that Diamond Dave is perfect for their format, and others will think Adam fits better with their format; other stations -- especially in larger markets -- may feel that going back to "live and local" is better than taking a chance on either of them.

Infinity may think that Sarah & No Name would fit better at Live 105 once Howard departs, and that Adam Carolla will fit better on another of their local stations (106.9?).

Or maybe they won't.

I've got the feeling that some Classic Rock stations across the heartland will decide to go with Diamond Dave, and others with a more "alternative" sound may go with Adam. Other stations -- especially in larger markets -- may decide to go "live and local" instead, as they were in their pre-Stern days.

Infinity may choose to slide Sarah & No Name over to Live 105, find someone new for their revamped sound on Alice, and save Adam Carolla for something else (such as their new 106.9, which will be ramping up in a few months).

Or maybe they won't.

And hey, Micky Dolenz and Danny Bonaduce are now both looking for their next radio jobs...

Infinity gave Diamond Dave an out-of-town tryout at LA FM Talker KLSX (three hours) and Boston's Classic Rock WZLX (for a full week) earlier this year (aircheck here). The DLR fans dug it the most.

Speaking of the heartland, Infinty is likely to go with their Cleveland ''Extreme'' crew--which has already syndicated to markets in Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin..they may swap signals with Stern's current Classic Rock home when the time comes..

Roth will likely end up in NYC, Boston, and other Eastern Seaboard markets, with Carolla aimed at West Coast markets..
