Adam the Bull heard via streaming this afternoon said...

Am listening to Adam the Bull's last show on WFAN's stream this afternoon.

Just heard him say...I haven't been able to say anything about this...."...it's been in the works for a few months..."...with reference to his coming to Cleveland.

Some of his listeners are calling in, saying goodbye, and wishing him well.

Sounds like a good guy, and sounds knowledgeable, professional.

Certainly those of us wish him & the 92.3 The Fan staff (someday to be 98.5 The Fan...LOL!!!!), all the best!

I was at a local shopping mall this afternoon, and remembered Adam's last WFAN show, so I listened via my smartphone.

Adam's good. He could well be the first breakout star of 92.3 The Fan, and if my last name were Reghi or Roda, I'd be VERY nervous.

Smart move coming out against the Steelers, as I told him on Twitter. It's darn near a password for entry into Northeast Ohio.

He explained later to me that he's actually a Bengals fan - starting with that because his father WAS a Browns fan, but took his allegiance to Paul Brown over to the Bengals when PB went there. He's apparently quite open about being a Bengals fan on WFAN, he mentioned it twice today.

So, his "I hate the Steelers" stuff is not a shtick for his new Cleveland listeners, but rather, organic :D

He got a lot of well wishes on WFAN for his move, some folks wishing he'd come back to NYC some day, and artfully defended Cleveland. He said people who bash Cleveland "have never been there", and declared he'd found good places to eat here in his week-long visit (I know he hit Michael Symon's "B-Spot" at least once).

It'll be interesting how he competes with Triv. R&R are in BIG trouble, but Triv's another story. I could easily see Adam a strong #2 to Triv in the appropriate male demos. Remember, a former 92.3 afternoon drive-delayed-from-morning show actually gave Triv some ratings indigestion...

I agree with OMW.

Reghi and Roda are in deep doo-doo. Though not nearly as bad, they're starting to get a case of RBS-itis...thinking their fecal matter doesn't offend nasal sensibilities.

This too must be factored in...

As we get into the fall/winter months, WKNR's nighttime signal will become an even bigger factor, cutting into R&R even more.

As far as pure sports talk goes, Adam (and whatever co-host winds up joining him) will be king of hill in PMD.

And he'll probably be able to hang with Triv and/or Alan Cox in the ratings (he'll get some listeners from each), though he probably won't overtake them.

As Adam gets ready to move to Cleveland...(his website says he'll live in Lakewood)

The "X Factor" here is who he'll be paired with, and how the show is structured. Adam is good, but who'll occupy the chair next to him in the Halle Building?

The thing I noticed about Adam on Saturday is that he handles callers well (WFAN is very much a caller-strong station)...he doesn't automatically agree with them, and engages them (respectfully) if he disagrees. And he's a good storyteller. That'll serve him well.

But...will his co-host drag him down, whoever that is? (And I haven't heard any rumors about that, 15 days before launch.)

Even with all those questions, it looks to me that I'll very rarely visit 850 in afternoon drive after the 29th. If whatever Adam-and-co-host are talking about isn't to my liking, I'll check in with the other suspects (Triv, Alan Cox, Golic) in the PM drive talk realm.

But all of 'em will have to bore the crap out of me before I hit up R&R.

Don't assume Adam won't go it solo. He sounded fine to me yesterday on WFAN's stream.

Regardless of the rumors we hear out of WKNR....the folks at 850AM have gotta be going a bit crazy with anxiety waiting for the new station to launch.

And, sadly...unless CBS implodes (not likely), there's really nothing much WKNR can ever do to combat The Fan, who even on 92.3, has a much better signal year-round, a company like CBS with deep, deep pockets, and a history of excellently-run sportstalk stations nationwide.

We all knew sooner or later somebody would go sportstalk on FM (I always thought it'd be WMMS).

And, CBS has the 98.5 frequency with it's great coverage and a fading existing music format, lying in the weeds for the frequency switch many of us believe will eventually happen (maybe sooner than most expect): The Fan 98.5! :)

I heard Adam the Bull myself last night, he's gonna kill R&R (and the last hour of Rome, and Browns Daily). However, I am a bit worried that CBS has yet to announce who will host the 10am-2pm slot (aka go against tRBS). I know CBS wants to do well in every daypart, but I don't think they are really concerned with Midday even though its against tRBS. I think CBS right now values AM drive and PM Drive much more than Midday.

Tim, Adam himself said on his Twitter account that there will be a co-host of some sort, and that he'll be on 2-7, not 3-7.

No idea who that co-host is, or if it'll be an athlete or another broadcaster. CBS tends to pair broadcaster/athlete on these stations...on Washington DC's Fan, it's former Redskin LaVar Arrington paired with a former host from the station's "hot talk" days (Chad Dukes, IIRC).

You're right, Adam solo would be just fine, but there is a co-host in the works.

Hmm. Don't know the status of his deal with GKB, and don't know if he has 5 hours each weekday in his schedule, but Bernie Kosar would certainly get a lot of publicity.

Kosar and the Bull!

No, that's not even a rumor, just something that popped into my head. It'd certainly answer the "Cleveland credibility" question, but could Bernie do five hours a day of talk radio...even assisted by an able co-host?

It'd sure get the new station a TON of publicity.

As a fan of Sports Talk Radio, I do not wanna to listen to Bernie Kosar for 5 hours each day. I know he is one of the most beloved icons in Cleveland, but that doesn't lead to good radio.

Wow...that'd kill my interest in Adam's show if Bernie played a big part of it.

Why? Bernie only talks about football...and becomes, IMHO, very boring the more he speaks.

May be a great guy, but on the air in small doses only.

I'm just throwing stuff up against the wall here to see if it sticks. For the record, I haven't heard that even as a faint rumor (and please don't pick it up as one from my posting).

And I addressed your thoughts above. I don't know if Bernie could even do 5 hours of talk radio a day, either in his schedule or as an athlete-turned-broadcaster. He may well be best in small doses.

But it'd sure get The Fan a bunch of publicity at launch. :D

Once again, this is not even a rumor I've heard. I was just going through local pro athletes with broadcasting experience and wondering what the reaction would be if X athlete was hired.

If I hear this as a rumor, I'm going to directly ask the person if it came from my post. :D

Again, just throwing stuff up against the wall here. I've heard no even soft rumors of who will be paired with Adam, and for that matter, I haven't heard any names attached to the 10-2/7-10 openings.

Perhaps Bernie as an occassional guest for a couple seguements. Otherwise, no, please.

OMW, and others: do you agree (or not)...if CBS does it right (most likely)....in the long run, there's really not a whole lot WKNR can do to combat them?

That'd still give them some publicity, if they poached Bernie as a paid guest.

I have no idea if he could even DO five hours a day of talk radio with a co-host. Again, THIS IS NOT A RUMOR. :D It was actually meant to get the "which athlete could they pair with Adam" discussion going.

If CBS Radio does this right, it'll really hurt WKNR. I see them going with more ESPN programming down the road, though tRBS is probably staying (with changes they are already trying on the air).

They've reset PMD a few times, what's to stop them from doing it again if Adam wipes the floor with R&R? Remember, Munch took over the slot from Roda at one point.

PMD is the most competitive "guy talk" daypart in the market, with Triv, Alan Cox, R&R and now Adam in the mix. As far as I know, R&R or whatever WKNR has offered in PMD hasn't ever been close to Triv, and with an in-format FM competitor, that's not going to get any better.

I understand this is not news/rumor. I'm just stating my opinion on the move if this did actually happen. As far following the CBS Sports format of local retired athlete, I honestly don't know who they can use. Maybe use Bernie as the 3rd guy for a hour of the program?

Bernie's best at what he is right now.

A football analyst who you bring on a couple of times a week during the season to break down the game.

I don't think he's the kind of guy who likes being couped up in a studio for 5 hours a day, and he has made no secret of the fact he would like to have an NFL front office gig (preferably for the Browns, but he'd go elsewhere if offered).

He hasn't been on KNR in ages (outside of the team produced "Browns Daily" show).

With the Xs and Os guys around, 850 hasn't felt the need to have him be their designated Browns analyst anymore.

On the contrary, I think they want to be careful putting that slot together. Who knows what they have in mind. Either way, it's probably going to smother tRBS in the ratings, no matter what they do.

I'm all for a co-host for Adam, but the co-host shouldn't upstage or be a detriment to him. If referring to a former Cleveland athlete, the pickings are very slim.

Don'ty get me wrong, I like people like Austin Carr, Bernie Kosar, Hanford Dixon, Mike Pagel, Jim Chones, Brad Daugherty, etc. But c'mon now. Five hours every weekday? Uh-uh to any of them. (If only Mark Price, still to this day one of the most beloved Cavs of all time, were available...)

Aside from, say, stealing LeCharles Bentley, I wouldn't know who they pair Adam with. For all we know, Adam could be solo at first... with the co-host to be announced soon.

CBS also uses some sportswriters - they do in DC, with the midday show hosted by Mike Wise (Washington Post columnist, up against former Postie Tony Kornheiser on 980).

It could be a sportswriter paired with Adam. We're all just guessing at this point.

The Fan in DC is actually fairly similar to 92.3 here. The signal is stronger in one part of the market than the other - though 106.7 has the advantage that the stronger signal is in the fastest growing part of the market, Northern Virginia.

106.7 also had a lot of success as a hot talker. It was Washington's home of Howard Stern, and home base for the WW1-syndicated "Don & Mike Show". There were occasional grumblings about the VA-based signal from Redskins fans in MD, and in fact, the signal basically barely made it to FedEx Field in that state. (The Redskins, of course, are now on Dan Snyder-owned WTEM/980 and its simulcast rimshot FMs.)

But overall, 106.7 as a guy talker made a TON of money.

Like D&M on 106.7, 92.3 similarly hosted Rover, who built his empire on that signal until Clear Channel waved a buncha cash in his face to move to WMMS.
