adding an FM signal would triple 1210s numbers

Lol -- I worked at Kiss and then EZ at the time when there were, indeed, four stations playing the same 300 songs. And I thought that a fifth -- WJBR -- was better than all of them!

A pal up here used to get booted from his TV (and house) by his wife for drinking. So he'd walk to my place with a 36-pack of Miller to LISTEN to Phillies games with me off WPHT, often when the Phillies played my Mets. (I haven't turned on a TV in years..) Lol -- he turned out to be quite the DXer, tilting the GE Superadio 2 back and forth for clearer reception during its cancellation fadeouts.
During those years I'd listen occasioannly to Smerconish and that guy with the money show for a while. One afternoon WPHT was getting splashed on by some Oldies station. The Oldies were off WGNY Newburgh NY on 1220, on what had to be daytime-skywave skip. I never heard WGNY again.

I have to wonder if Smerconish was always a liberal pretending to be a conservative in order to work at that station or if he truly switched ideologies during the Obama years. It’s highly unusual for right leaning folks to all of a sudden support Democrats out of nowhere. Maybe he wasn’t getting invited to all of the swanky cocktail parties on the Main Line.

I know 1210 is broadcasting in AM HD, but it's hard to get that to lock on at night in SC. Are there any other stations around still broadcasting AM HD? Would hope to check that out next time I'm around the Philly area. I'm pretty sure all New York stations don't anymore. Would love to see 650 WSM Nashville in AM HD.

Only one time that I ever get to experience a station in AM HD which seemed pretty cool. It was 1480 AM in Charlotte NC (WGFY - When it was still Radio Disney) which only seemed to work within 5 miles of the tower site, and what a difference in sound quality in HD versus literally AM quality. Former AM 1660 in Charlotte had AM HD recently but I couldn't lock on it.

I say this as no fan of his particular style of doing a show, but his approach has been fairly consistent. The Republican party began its descent into the cesspool it has become as Obama came to prominence. The undercurrents had long been there, but the racism and bigotry became the norm, not the fringe. That Smirconish didn't follow along does not make him a liberal, not then and not now. It wasn't out of nowhere, it was assessing the situation as it existed. There was plenty of awfulness in the GOP before (trickle-down economics, the reprehensible lack of response to AIDS, etc.). And the racism was there in pockets to be sure. But between 2008 and now, there is no smoothing over the descent into full-on grievance politics, hatred and inane conspiracy theories that drive that party today.

With Washington and Baltimore so close any market covering FM signal: 250 watts or tall tower (Fx), class A, B, or B1 would be difficult and expensive to find, buy or LMA. That leads to the million dollar question: If 1210 tripled it's +55 would it justify the expense of acquiring a "market covering FM signal". I doubt it unless a host can be found that can pull down Limbaugh numbers. Also ad agency's bias against +55 does not help.

IMHO: If you go down a "superstar host" path, have a plan on what to do if something happens to that host.

I believe that last line is precisely what would make the possibility too big a gamble. I suspect the next "big thing" to happen to WPHT's talk format will be its demise.

Just a casual perusal of the major markets shows a blackboard of 50,000 watt omnis being treated with apathy.
(I include directionals WBZ and WWL as omnis because they send their signals over land. )
The under-55 numbers for these facilities have to be miniscule. WPHT 1210 seems closest to having ANY changes campaigned on milk cartons as a search for missing people. WPHT is, actually, a severe case of the terminal nationwide affliction.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Audacy got rid of WTDY for talk radio? Sounds like WPHT could goto 96.5 under these circumstances. Sounds familiar? because it was back in 2000 when WWDB was kicked off the air in favor of "The Point" then "Wild 96.5" which later became "Wired" which I miss and would prefer on there.

WWDB is still on AM tho and still owned by Beasley, which sold 96.5 to Audacy.

Audacy will ride WPHT until it's no longer profitable. Then it would either be sell the tower land and turn it off, or find a religious or ethnic broadcaster willing to pay for the signal and sell it to them.
💯

I followed the Phillies for many years, mostly on radio as it was portable and I could do other things while the play-by-play was on. One time in the 90s, I think, I was visiting in Florida and needed to hear what was going on with the Phillies, so I tuned into 1210 and was able to get the score of the game.

In 2010, we moved to Florida permanently, and I was ready to pretty much give up on being a Phillies fan, but that was hard at that time with their recent years in the World Series. Before streaming took hold, my only choice for watching a game on TV was whenever FOX would pick a Saturday game to show nationally. And other times, when the team was on the west coast, I could pick up 1210 on a little headset radio and hear the play-by-play. The local radio around here doesn't run any MLB games other than the Tampa flagship for the Rays, and the Phillies didn't play the Rays very often.

A few years ago of course, the Phillies were moved over to FM, pretty much eliminating any of that DX reception.

Thankfully with computers and streaming, I now subscribe to MLB.tv and can watch nearly all Phillies games - AND can still get to hear the great radio play-by-play as well - without the fading in and out.

It’s a shame they no longer air Phillies games. It took away their one opportunity to promote their talk programming during games to potential listeners.

A radio station's demise (especially that of an AM) doesn't necessarily have to be a format change.
Before they sell or shut down wouldn’t it make sense to first reduce costs by going to all syndicated programming or even affiliating with Bloomberg Radio.

Kind of depends on when (if) a hypothetical offer comes in. If someone ponies up the cash, and it’s a good business decision, take the darn money whenever it comes.

As to the Phils, the value on 1210 is something less than minimal, compared to being on WIP (conflicts notwithstanding).

When I saw the headline, I wondered if maybe Julius had written it!

Can you imagine, there are no AM-only stations getting at least a one-rating in Philadelphia? WPHT is below the 1.0 threshold.

If KYW were still on AM only, it would likely get a good rating. Combined with the FM, it's ranked #3 in the latest ratings. We don't know how much of that is 1060 listening. Maybe a third? But wow, is AM radio in Philadelphia hurting!
Agree. WWJ in Detroit still does well as an AM-only all news station. WCBS in NYC does okay on AM, but they share an audience with 1010 WINS on AM/FM. Both are audacy stations.
