Adding new music

I was wondering if many ACs do this.

My local Entercom AC, WSPA-FM, has an interesting practice to adding songs to the playlist. For about a month before "new" songs are added full-time, they only play them between 12am and 5am. Right now, the songs that are getting that treatment are Matt Nathanson - Come On Get Higher, Seal - If You Don't Know Me, Taylor Hicks - Whats Right is Right, David Cook - Light On (I believe), Jim Brickman/Rush of Fools - Never Far Away. These songs are played virtually every night, in a graveyard time. They did this with Love Remains The Same and Love Story before they started playing them during the day. Is this a common practice among AC stations? What is the purpose? A couple songs they have done that way, and they never really make it and are removed.

The crosstown CC AC, WMYI, however is much safer and just adds really big hits and one day you won't hear it then they'll be playing it to death (typical 150 song playlist Clear Channel AC) the next day.

Thoughts?

Sounds to me like their main reason for doing it is to pad the overnight clock with more music, maybe to give fewer rotations to a major gold category or something. It's a bit pointless to play a "new" category only at night (I assume they are being promoted as "new" with a liner before the song is played). It takes away from the uniformity of the station, and a lot of those songs are not "new" even for AC. If one has a specifically "new" category then the songs need enough exposure to become familiar to the audience, and playing them only between midnight and 5 AM is no way to do that. That being said, the other AC in your town is probably making the smarter move here.

That's an interesting way to daypart music. It makes sense to me but I've never heard of it being done before.

Does WSPA still use that funky system with the voice that comes in and back announces every song?

Yep....sort of an annoyance - disconnects the jock IMO.

The programmer seems to know his stuff (although this site hasn't been updated in ages http://www.hamlinprogramming.com)
