Adios Jay Beau

Mullaney SHOULD get it...but when the station doesn't perform well, it's the head that gets cut off, not the torso. Might be better as APD.

WODS is a clunky set of call letters to reel off quickly. "Oldies 103" has a much better flow than "W-O-D-S 103 point 3", but I can see why they want shift away from "Oldies" and target a younger audience that hears oldies and thinks Elvis, Buddy Holly and music from WAY before their time. I wonder if they ever considered switching to a classic but disused set of call letters (ie WCOZ, WMEX) and abandoning the WODS calls (that, after all, were chosen for their similarity to the word "Oldies")

As nice as it would be to see some vintage calls come back, there's no compelling reason for CBS to do it. The 25-54 demo in WCOZ's last year on the air, 1984, is now 52-81. The 25-54 demo the last time "WMEX" was a successful set of calls in town (discounting the brief run of AM oldies in the late 1980s on 1150 and the even briefer run of talk on 1060 in the 1990s) are now 60-89, and that's not even taking into account all the churn from new people moving into town.

"WCOZ" or "WMEX" would mean nothing to almost any real-world radio listener in 103.3's target demos these days. (WCOZ maybe a little more than WMEX, but not much.)

And of course in a PPM world, calls don't really mean anything, anyway.

One thing I've noticed with the WODS calls is that when you say them W-O-D-S, doesn't it sound like W-odious?

Greg Strassell and Mark Hannon are not easy guys to work for. Nobody's really been able to work with the difficult situation there, format wise, management wise, etc. My understanding from people inside is that Mullaney's not interested in the position... it's pretty risky.

It's always surprised me how they seem to pull such a high cume, yet their share is always so low. Is it that they attract lots of listeners, and they simply don't stay. Being that low in share, I'd assume they have a tougher time getting on buys, seeing as how an agency most of the time buys the top 5 or 10 stations in a demo.

Really? I have known them both for almost 20 years and find no truth to that statement whatsoever. Did you ever actually WORK for them? The team they assemble is usually top notch. I found Jay Beau to be a pro as well.

Now, I am sure the negative people here will have their say...go for it. Karma's a bitch.

Barry, I'm drawing conclusions based on personal conversations with individuals over the years. It's true that I don't have any first-hand experience with Mark and Greg. I work for CBS in another city, and I trust what I've been told. Both are great guys, very talented. However, there's a dynamic in management that doesn't "run on all cylinders." There's a difference between constructive criticism and negativity. Mark and Greg are great guys, and Jaybeau has been a personal friend for several years. I know him almost exclusively in a social sense so I'll admit I'm pretty biased to him.

However, as an observer with second-hand knowledge and a view from outside the cluster, you can see that something there isn't quite "clicking." CBS is an incredibly great company (again... biased, the eye logo is on my paycheck.) and 104.1 has the potential to be more.

The problem that I found with Mix is that they play the same songs, over and over! It never used to be that way. Maybe that will change? I do not know Jay Beau so I will not offer an opinion at all.

If Jay Beau actually did leave on his own, the question is where will he end up? Where is he going to? I can't imagine someone leaving in this day and age without having something lined up. I will throw something out there, maybe Greater Media snagged him to launch a top 40 to go up against Kiss. There has been much talk about Greater blowing up 96.9 around here. Maybe it is actually happening?

Barry, you've never had a nice thing to say about Jay Beau, Strassell, Hannon or Brian Thomas. You complain about how they don't understand your show. You're the first one to say Karma's a bitch, so maybe it is, and the first thing the 'new guy' does is find a new weekend show that is free rather than paying you to come in to do it.
