Adios KCKY

It's the end of the line for 1150 KCKY Coolidge, as Cortaro Broadcasting has surrendered it's license to the FCC.

KCKY's heydey was a nearly 20 year run with a local Country music format as the KiloCycle KowboY. At one time their DJ's included Waylon Jennings and Lee Hazelwood. This station has been on a long death spiral for 40 years, and it looks like it's curtains now.

IIRC, they were the local home of Cubs baseball and University of Nebraska football in decades past. I thought they shut down years ago.

Weren't they co-owned with KASA/1540, which I believe is gone, too?

A few years back the FCC yanked their license for failure to pay penalties and fines. KCKY claimed sloppy record keeping and without their programming, the penal colony in Florence would have no hope. The license was reinstated, but this time...who knows what the story is? Tough sledding for any radio station in Coolidge. And yes, they were connected with KASA 15~Forty - another hard luck station whose only value is the paired translator.

I believe Radio Hogar ran a trimulcast with KASA, KCKY, and KSAZ doing a Spanish Christian format...and now all three are gone.

They should call it KASA de Cartas. House of Cards. That station has real and fairly imminent problems on pretty much every front:
  • The operating condition of the facility is an open question, as they sold the land years ago (late 2019-ish) to a charter school which used it to build, what do you know, a charter school (Academy of Math and Science).
  • Their public inspection file is very bare. No issues and programs lists past 2Q 2021. No political file or anything else, including an LMA for the La Indiscreta operation. No 2023 ownership biennial.
  • The FM translator has basically been evicted by Entravision from its perch by KDVA's move to 106.7. Interference complaints are pending.
In fact, the FCC has these questions because it received a complaint about silence over a year and unauthorized origination. On February 13, it sent a letter of inquiry to KASA Radio Hogar on this very topic, requesting loads of information from their counsel. La Indiscreta is about to be La Muerta.

Hmmm...

We'll let the Old Gringo correct your grammar, pero Ud tiene razon. KASA has a boatload of problemas. They got some 'splainin' to do.

KASA filed a request for yet another STA extension with the FCC on March 29th, it is currently pending. The excuses are nothing new, COVID, unable to diplex with KNUV or KOY, finding a site elsewhere has been daunting. They want to set up a long wire antenna on an adjacent property, didn't mention who that owner is.

Might as well apply for the KAKA AM call letters and call it a day. This is a real :poop: show

They filed for silent STA today.

KASA Radio Hogar, licensee of AM radio station KASA, Phoenix, Arizona (FCC facility ID 33451) hereby requests authority for the station to remain silent pending replacement of its transmitter.
The transmitter had been problematic for some time, but previously when it has failed, repairs have been made within a few days, either on site or, if necessary, it has been shipped to KASA’s field engineer David Biondi in Houston to be fixed. Most recently the transmitter went out of service on or about February 19, 2024. It was shipped to Houston to be repaired on February 21, 2024.
Unfortunately, this last time sensitive components were damaged extensively in shipment. As a result, Mr. Biondi has been unable to repair all of the damage. Accordingly, he has recommended that KASA replace the unit.
Arrangements are currently being made to procure a replacement. Mr. Biondi has located an appropriate unit and is negotiating for its purchase on behalf of the licensee. It is anticipated that the replacement will be shipped to Arizona and installed within the next two to three weeks.
In the meantime, it is necessary for KASA to request special temporary authority to cover the current period of silence. The silent period was not expected to last more than 30 days, since similar issues have been resolved in the past through repairs by Mr. Biondi within such a time window. Due to miscommunication, counsel was not advised of the delay in resolution of this problem this time until the last few days; hence the delay in submission of the instant request for silent STA. KASA apologizes for the lateness of this request, and will take steps to ensure that it does not recur.

🎶 Ja Ja Ja Jive Talkin'. They've been dragging their feet for years getting KASA 15~Forty back on the air, while running the translator in violation of FCC regs. They aint broke: https://www.laindiscretafm.com/

It's almost comical. KASA KAKA has to send the damaged transmitter to Houston so their engineer can fix it. Then it gets damaged in transit. Now the Houston engineer is checking eBay for a used ancient modulation transmitter. Here's a wild guess from Los Buckeye Boyz - it'll get damaged on the way back to Phoenix. 🎶 O-bla-di, O-bla-da...

So by the time it gets to Phoenix, it’ll be broken?
