Adobe and Vista problems

I just installed a new PC computer system, dual-core, for the home office with Vista OS. Most everything works, but I have trouble with Adobe 2.0 Audition. The record mode shows about 40% level with no feed, and it won't record. The cards have been triple checked for installation. The same mixer set-up works fine when the old beast is substituted.

The tech at the store says that "lots" of people have complained about the same problem, and that Adobe needs to update the program, as it will not run in Vista.

Anyone?

Of coures not. That would require effort and thinking on my part! Thanks for your help.

SP1? Don't bet on it...

Vista is BETA-ware anyway. Most IT people say it is until they come out with SP1.

Don't expect SP1. With Vista, you HAVE to accept that auto-updates will be on. It's NOT optional.

Microsoft will be applying updates and patches regularly, so there will never be a need for a Service Pack. Whether we'll know which automatic update screws up existing software or your system remains to be seen.

I'll admit that I am a Luddite. I still run Windows 2000 on my home machine because I can control the O/S without going through a freakin' wizard every time I want to change a setting. I have to admit that I'm considering upgrading to XP Pro because some driver upgrades are getting cranky about 2000.

I've been talking with guys planning a major Vista rollout. It seems that there are lots of software "issues". A lot of them will require a response from the software manufacturers, who will be expected to upgrade their software to work with Vista.

Ouch! I guess I'll stay with XP then. Nothing like upgrading Windows only to discover other software won't run. :(

"With Vista, you HAVE to accept that auto-updates will be on. It's NOT optional. "

On my Vista (Business Edition, but don't get me started on that crap) test machine, I have all the auto stuff turned off. No pop-ups warning me about anything ever. I have to run "Update" manually. Took me a week to find all the little check boxes.

But now (like in the Mac commercial) I'm NOT PROTECTED!!!! OooooNooooo!

I'll chime in with my dissatisfaction about Vista. I recently bought a new computer that I thought would be a rocket ship. Dual core processors, 1 GB or Ram and a 250 GB hard drive should be pretty good. It was a total dog, running about as slow as my old Tandy TRS-80 with a cassette tape back up. It turns out that you really need 2 GB to run vista. Worse yet, a lot of Microsoft’s own programs wouldn't run on it without spending half a day installing updates. One program, Microsoft Front Page, never worked properly on it and MS did not have any patches to fix the problems. Their web site said they have discontinued the program and would release a replacement that was Vista compatible in a few months. That' nice, but I needed it to work right now.

I ended up returning the computer to the dealer, who was apparently quite used to getting Vista computers rectaly inserted by their customers. I tried to be very nice about it, and they fully refunded my money with no hassle. I'm now running a built from scratch XP Pro computer with similar specs to the one that came with the Vista package. The best news is it only came with an operating system and AVG anti virus software. It doesn't have any weird software in it for various ISP's, music services, porn sites, ink and toner sales, etc that lurk in most new factory assembled computers. It is a rocket ship.

There are some nice features to Vista, but IMHO, they are not worth the bother, at least not until they actually get it to work. It makes Linux look very attractive. I hear that Kubuntu is great....
