Ads must really be down

Proof that radio ads are dropping off in this economic down-turn can be heard on the Philly CBS stations. All the stations are begging for advertisers, with spots promoting all CBS stations in the market. In addition, KYW is running PSA's instead the usual "pay when someone calls a number" ads. This is not a good sign.

I've often heard stations beg for ads in the past, but now the spots begging for help are far more "in your face". How long will it be before there are more cuts at the CBS stations here in Philadelphia?

Have they resorted to playing ads for their HearPhilly.com Internet stream on these stations yet?

Same thing in New York at WFAN.

CBS corporate might want to rethink high spotloads companywide. When you've got a 20-minute spotload and a good bunch of it is P-I/PSA you know the economy is a-hurtin'. Morning show is of course a different thing.

Its not that bad. This is an election year, and PA is gonna be a battle state again. So come July/August, both TV and radio will be full with political ads again. After that is the hoilday season, so they just need to rough it out for a few months, and then they will be good until January.

Compared to the rates of those years, it's still very good. Fewer spots, more money.

I think the reduction of the "1-800..." spots is due to a change in the Google-D-Marc ad buying policy. They use to buy all unsold time at a pre-negotiated rate, but have switched to a per inquiry type of payment, which is why the stations have cut back drastically.

Radio stations don't get rich off of political ads. Political ads air at the cheapest rate on the station. Thank those who make laws for a living for giving themselves their own little gift.

And given that Christmas ads start earlier each year, having the politicos booking time in October at their el cheapo rate, the station earns less.

Also, the economy may not be out of the blahs by holiday time. The Christmas ads may not be as plentiful as before.

Well, I was mainly speaking of filling the spots, not how much they bring in, but yeah your right. I do however think regradless of the economy, there will be plenty of ads for the hoilday

Maybe, just maybe it's NOT that the "ads are down."

Maybe it's that the "content" sucks.
