Ads running on WRXP for WFAN-FM launch Nov 2 at 12AM

New Rock 101.9 dies tonight.

WFAN imaged spots are running promoting 'WFAN Sports Radio 66 on FM at WFAN-FM 101.9 tonight at midnight.

Clearly CBS thinks it's going to maintain some of the current audience.

They may have an established product and a brand behind them which Merlin did not have, but I predict ratings only slightly better than Merlin's news format. I suppose the Ad revenue will keep the format on that frequency longer than the dismal ratings will. If they really wanted spoken word on FM they would have been wiser to have a local news talk format instead which I suspect would do better than sports talk.

WFAN really should have went to 92.3. The current format on 101.9 already tied 92.3 in the NYC PPM ratings in just a few months of existence. RXP totally blew XRK away in the Nassau/Suffolk book.

CBS has to figure out wich news station too keep around either WCBS or WINS you cant have 2 news stations on fm if and when the time comes too move them

Seriously?! Only slightly better than Merlin's news format? Does anyone remember that FM News got a .6?! I think everyone can agree that WFAN will get at least in the mid-2's.

Sports bills much better than local news talk. Look at the billing of WABC (yeah, it's not local but it's news/talk) vs. WFAN. There are all of your answers. Stop looking at the ratings and start looking at the billing numbers to figure out what formats are going where.

I don't think WFAN will get dismal ratings on 101.9. Most likely they will improve. The Fan has been around for 25 years, people know it and have a listening relationship with the hosts. FM News was a hack job from day 1, competing with 2 well established all news stations. The only other competition that WFAN has in the sports format is WEPN, and they don't have the same "NY Feel" that WFAN has.

You just sound mad because the stop-gap rock format is going away.

I get it you are big fan of the WFAN. Like I said, "the Ad revenue will keep the format on that frequency longer". The only way I see it lasting and getting in mid 2s is if they stop the simulcast on AM. The risk to that is people may change their habits and go the WEPN.

I listen to Sports manly on AM, 49ers or the Giants

Sports Sounds better on AM then FM

The FM signal will most likely go mono.... WHAT A WASTE!!!!

Not if it allows for more coverage. The era of niche formats on big FM signals is coming to an end--deal with it.

The CBS owned sports stations on FM that I've heard are in stereo. WEPN-FM and the Merlin owned news/talk ststions (the old WEMP and the current WWIQ) broadcast in mono, I guess to get the additional 1 or 2 miles of coverage... :)

Seriously.... like another post said, quit looking at ratings. WFAN at times has been one of the highest billing stations in the country. It will smash any rock format in billing.... and that's what matters. Simulcasting on the FM dial will only increase that bottom line. ESPN 98.7 is still new so I don't even consider them a factor yet. And I believe 101.9 will be in stereo, and will be in HD. Aren't we expecting the national CBS Sports Radio network to probably run after the 1st of the year on the HD2? I would think so.

Anything Merlin has or hasn't done with the last year is completely irrelevant. This is starting from scratch.

It could have been two separate revenue streams, 101.9 and 660. Now it will be down to one and double the overhead. Unless the plan is to sell 660 or put a different format on it after a period they believe the listeners have sufficiently migrated over to 101.9.

I wonder if CBS will keep the smooth jazz format that has been on 101.9 HD2.
If not, it will be the end of a rather long run for smooth jazz on 101.9-first on the main signal, then on HD2 after the flip several years ago from WQCD to the original WRXP.

The only overhead on 101.9 is the rent for the space on top of Empire.

A full blown rock station will have much more overhead. An airstaff, promotions, sales, GM, PD, music director, marketing budget etc.

Eventually 660 can split off to run CBS Sports Network shows.

WBZ-FM the Sports Hub in Boston 98.5 is still in stereo. Do Patriots play by play in stereo. The Entercomm Sports Talker WEEI-FM 93.7 that does Red Sox play by play is in Mono.
