Adult Hits In Macon

Not good.I assme your talking about a standards format.Warner Robins has one on 1350 Am WMNG.

All things are possible! Now that the spring Arbitron results are in and EWPEZ and WMGB are on a continual decline, there should be some definite rumbles in the market. Does Macon need a "Jack" format or some "live" jocks with personality? And how about a little gutsy programming?

Raydiohead, don't let 12+ numbers fool you. They're nothing more than a beauty contest.

What may look like a "continual decline" may not be the case. Considering that Macon is an ethnic-weighted, HDBA market, speaking for WPEZ, it's in fine shape where it needs to be, with persons (particularly women) 25-54.

Just 'cause a station's not number one in all demos doesn't mean it's in the terlet, and that a format change is imminent. Nor does it mean that a format with the thin membrane of an adult hits direction is a good idea.

It's "toilet".

No, radionut, a "toilet" is a device designed for the proper disposal of human waste.

The "terlet" mentioned in the previous post would be a device of similar design, but with the specific intention of the proper disposal of board-posters who have no clue, as well as radio stations that also have no clue.

Guess you're too young to have ever watched "All In The Family", huh?

Now, I haven't BEEN in Macon in awhile, nor within earshot of WMGB, but as recently as, say, 2003, WMGB WAS more of an "adult" CHR/Hot AC, anyhow.

Last time I was in Macon, they were doing a blatant rip off of Star 94's "Friday Night 80s' show. They were still running Steve & DC in the morning, too, and I've NEVER visited Macon and heard a live jock in middays.

Not saying that hasn't changed, but at least early on in Cumulus' hold on the station and well before it with its previous ownership, that station was poorly programmed.

Haven't heard it in a few years though, so maybe all that's gotten tightened up since.

Well, since I was the PD for one year (04-05) while programming WPEZ (03-05), I think I have a dog in this hunt. First, I admit that Friday Night 80's was not the best program it could've been, but it served it's purpose in taking over the shift of WPEZ moving to the 70's for the signature shows. The Drive at Five was great on WPEZ, but the 70's Superhighway did better. On WMGB, the Drive At Five and Friday Night 80's worked at first, but the strong live evening show that Rob Ray did was stronger and we dropped it. In 2003, we actually were live in Midday and Afternoon, and in 2004 we were live from 9am until Midnight through Labor Day Weekend when we lost Rob in a tragic accident. I did the first eulogy of a staffer in my career and hope I never have to do that again. Though I admittedly spent more time and effort on WPEZ, WMGB was a stronger station that you remember and did even better after I handed the station over to Calvin Hicks in 2005. The station became more focused then than ever. Calvin lived the CHR lifestyle, so it made a big difference. I am an AC/Country/NewsTalk guy and that shows in my career choices and programming decisions.

Also, my midday folks ended up either winning the lottery (Melissa) or working on satellite radio (Chase)...both working live during their time. Had Rob lived, I would bet that he would be in a major market right now. He was that good and the Best Music Director I ever had...but, I guess I was just too weak a programmer to please some folks or make a difference. I guess market research and working in your hometown means nothing. (sarcasm alert)

Glad to see you working Ron...

Hey HanK!

You filled in some gaps in my recollections. I remember you and I talking right before Calvin accepted the position, and while my heart tugged at coming back that way, closer to home, I had financial perks back here in Louisiana that kept me from taking the leap.

I'd always heard good things about Calvin Hicks, and you're right, he's sharp when it comes to having a station "lifestyle-focused."

Like I said, I hadn't heard WMGB in awhile, so my recollections are spotty, at-best.

BEFORE Cumulus (and you, of course), though, that station was run like a small-town station, though. Agree?

Yes, but it was number two at times in Billing among the cluster so it was doing something right. Have a great show on B97 and good luck down there. Gotta go get some more sponsors for High School Football and the Little League World Series games...

I've seen the entire Spring 07 ratings results for Macon. WPEZ and WMGB are on a steady decline in every demographic.

WMGB has not had a midday talent for over a year, the new PD/Afternoon jock has no street presence and as for nights...let's just say they may as well sign off.

WPEZ lost its midday talent at the start of the book and she was replaced with an overbearing voice-tracker. The WPEZ morning show needs to be freshened. The best thing going for WPEZ is David in the afternoons...and from what I've heard, he's a bit frazzled by all the other duties dear old Cumulus has him doing. Oh, and let's not forget John Tesh at nights...PLEASE! Where is Delilah when you need her.

How often can you listen to Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty, or Maroon 5? There is tremendous erosion in WMGB's TSL and the Cume is demonstrative. The new station voice guy is amateur and doesn't match the current sound of the station.

WPEZ will make adjustments and show steady growth...and let's not forget they will begin playing Christmas music November 1!
WMGB needs a complete make over! The hybrid CHR - HOT AC is not working. Grow some balls and be a full time CHR, get rid of Steve and DC, hire a midday talent and get a real night talent.

Maybe with these adjustments we'll see a shift in 12+ numbers, which presents a reflection of the overall market view. ;D

On Sunny 99.9FM...Shame it doesn't have a full metro signal, just Warner Robins to Cordele. We signed on the station with a Delilah appearance in Warner Robins (the top hot zip when I was at WPEZ). Don't expect any ratings in Macon on this one, but tons of response for advertisers looking for South Macon Metro listeners. Warner Robins Little League World Series games are airing there and WNNG-AM. If Warner Robins beats Texas on Saturday afternoon (3:30p), they play the international winner on Sunday afternoon on both stations. If they lose, they will be playing for third place on Sunday at 12:30pm only on Sunny. Doing the local stuff won't make it number one, but it is making a difference in Houston County.

I didn't mean to take away from the topic, but not much left to be said.

<<WPEZ lost its midday talent at the start of the book and she was replaced with an overbearing voice-tracker. The WPEZ morning show needs to be freshened>>

Tongue firmly implanted in cheek:
Y'know, Raydiohead, you're right. I don't know why I never saw it before now.

That "overbearing voice-tracker" is just too much for the sensitive ears of our female listeners on Z93.7. Just because he took on the additional responsibility of taking care of middays even without me having to ask him too, and he already has a full-time gig as production director of an 8 station cluster (one of the most thankless jobs in this business), and just because he was always willing to do the 70's specialty show live every day and even do live contests when asked to... none of that matters in the grand scheme. He is, afterall, OVERBEARING!!!

So I'm yanking his sorry arse off the air at the end of the week and replacing him with all-commercials, all the time in the midday. That's right, no more All 70's Lunch Hour, no lite rock favorites for the workday; It'll just be Quicken Loans, Geico, and Goodwill recruitment spots throughout the entire daypart.

As for the morning show, well, I'm not going to let a little thing like 17 years of morning heritage keep us from beating Shayne and Ron -- wait, already did that --. So I guess we'll hang on to Paul for the time being, since I really don't want to have to get up at 3am every morning anymore.

Thanks for the input. I'll be sure to let Jan and Jim and the folks at Cumulus corporate know that all our problems here have been solved, and they can worry about their major-market stations without having to be interrupted for us little guys in Macon.

Thank you for this, Hank! It was good to hear Saturday's game while the wife and I were taking care of errands around town. The signal was very clear on the west side of Macon.

Which signal? WNNG or WQSA?

Speaking of Christmas music I hope Wpez will start November 1st the earlier the better.Xm's Holly channel will be premering November 13th.I get in the Christmas spirit after Halloween so I think November 1st would be a good time to start. The stores have all the Christmas stuff out anyway by then.Any chance they will do this November 1st Hank?I really enjoy listening to their holiday format.Last year Wpch 96.5 started October 31st but they won't be doing it that early this year I don't think.
