Adult Standards Format (Dial-Global) in Florida

Anyone work for a station in Florida carrying Dial-Global's Adult Standards format?
I do mornings on a station in SW FL that does ... I am trying to bring some life
into that format with some 50's/60's rock interspersed with the usual standards.
So far getting a good response.

KII...wow, you guys have been carrying that format since the beginning of time. I was in High School when I first heard that station (back then it was "AM Only" from Unistar), and have since gotten into radio (14 years ago), and you're still doing the format. One of the stations I worked at, the former WMRZ/790 in Miami, had carried the format, but that was before I got there...We still had the Nostalgia CDs that were used in the live/local shifts, and since at the time we were a brokered station, we used them to fill unsold blocks...We pretty much got to pick what we played and took requests from a very loyal and very loving "condo commando" audience that many of us knew by name. The format has evolved quite a bit since then, but I remember getting a very negative response any time I played anything with a semi-contemporary lean. Then again I would do some very 'experimental' things like play "Born To Be Wild" from the "Best of the 60s" CD that was used to play "Grazing In The Grass", or "Sweet Love Hangover" by Diana Ross, from the CD we used to play "Love Theme from Mahogany".

No question the format has evolved quite a bit since then, especially since the old-to-new songs ratio has increased dramatically. I don't know that many stations in this state are left carrying that particular feed...I know WONN in Lakeland used to, but since switched to ABC's. At one point, 92.1 in Immokalee/Naples ran it, so it was possible to hear it from my usual vacation spot in Sanibel, and WKII at the same time and "compare notes". WPDQ/600 in Jacksonville, did, too, long ago, but that was several formats ago.

OK, now I know...I believe WSVU/960 in West Palm runs it, at least in certain dayparts....Ironically, called "Seaview", like your sister FM, and was actually put on the air by the same guy that put 104.9 on. I believe there is an FM in Apalachicola that was running it, too, WFCT I believe. 105.5. Nothing else comes to mind at the moment.

Stations that stream the Dial-Global standards format that I can think of are KHUI(FM) in Honolulu, KTPI(AM) in Mojave, CA, and KIIX in Colorado.....The last 2 are sisters of yours....Just so you can tune them in and get an idea of how they execute it.

One of the things that my old station did (and quite well) was they would have the satellite jocks do random time and temperature checks to make the station sound local...Things like "This is Chick Watkins, and it's 3:17 on WMRZ", or "This is Chick Watkins...Expect Partly Cloudy Skies, but there's always, Music, on 790 Memories, WMRZ".

Sorry for such a long post but this particular format is one that I've enjoyed quite a bit over the years.

I enjoy WKII's music from time-to-time. Really a well run station from what I can tell. Also runs top-of-the-hour news which I find handy, especially during the last storm Fay. It may run music from a satellite at times, but it has a local touch that is well done.

No one has yet mentioned us, but in advance of that, WRZN-AM 720 near Ocala FL airs a format that is 100% local in origin, is not satellite delivered or sindicated.

You guys need a website. I am looking to advertise a product geared towards seniors and it is hard to get info on your station. I call ed once and was sent somewhere up north. I am in Orlando and your signal is not too strong.

With the aging of the traditional 'standards' format, I was thinking it might be a good idea rather than to mix uptempo oldies with standards; to instead mix softer, more modern hits with some of the old standards. Besides "Barbra, Barry and Neil", include Roberta Flack, Neil Sedaka, Paul Anka, The Vogues, The Lettermen, Josh Groban, Brenda Russell, Dan Hill, Kenny Nolan, LeBlanc and Carr, George Michael (particularly the song "Kissing A Fool"), just to name a few. If you wanted to 'throw in' a little big band sound, the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy would be appropriate IMO.

Wow that's new....WRZN used to run ABC when I lived in Gainesville and, more recently was running WW1/Dial-Global. Think afternoons only (or mornings and afternoons) were live and local back then.

That was back when 980 in Gainesville was running Standards and, although not a simulcast, was co-owned and running the same feed. That one is Country now.

While in Panama City Beach I was hearing Adult Standards on AM 590. They seemed to be using a different feed than the year before. Still sounded good.

How does Dial-Global compare with Jones Standards? I ask because we have a Jones affiliate. I hear that Dial-Global bought Jones and they will merge into the current Dial-Global Standards format on Sept 30.

The standards station nearest me is WAVO-1150 in Rock Hill pretty much a transmitter and a satellite dish. I can't hear them at night because they go from 5KW to 58 watts!

Where I am we have a lot of format duplication but not many unique formats or much of anything for the upper age demos. Just my luck, I enjoy standards even though it's not the music of my generation. Good music is timeless!

I was going to drop in a comment on the post about adding MOR/AC hits into the format, but Mike hit the nail on the head. The music is timeless and is still alive!

We are working from the idea that a radio station playing The Great American Songbook should be unique and tap into the surge of new product by new artists to the format with The Penthouse (ThePenthouse.FM).

We don't approach the audience as a "memories" station, but rather the source for timeless music - Standards - done by artists like Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Rod Stewart, Art Garfunkel, Anne Hampton Callaway, Barry Manilow, John Pizzarelli, Bette Midler and Carly Simon as well as the classic artists like Sinatra, Ella, Mel Torme', Peggy Lee and the rest.

We don't have to worry about being a "65 to death" station as we bring in the people in their 30s and 40s who are "discovering" adult standards...and since we are playing the music and (most importantly) not chasing people away, we are (happily) still getting the upper demos, too.
