Adult Swim on Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network is slowly growning the Adult Swim at night from 11am to 6am into a ratings bonanza (for late night that is).

Ive been watching the various shows and have grown fond of Harvey birdman, Full Metal Alchemist, Inyuasha, and Samuari Champloo, among others.

I was really shocked at the "captive" quality of the Japanese Anime shows...the stories are almost as rich as some regular television shows....especially the Full Metal alchemist anime.

Talk about stealthy....I'll bet many adults haven't really gotten a peek yet...but the youth of course seem to eat this stuff up.....along with the Daily Show.

I hadn't seen much mentioned about it so was curious if anyone shares the same interest

Dude, I am waiting for them to show the premiere of "The Boondocks", based on the comic strip. It supposed to premiere this month.

Adult Swim? They should call it Adult Smut!

At first Adult Swim seemed like good alternative programming, a sort of "liquid Television" network, they just couldn't use the name "Liquid TV," so they called it Adult swim instead.

But ya know? Lately I've become turned off to the whole thing. It seems that every cartoon is the same joke.

For example, Aqua Teen Hunger Force was cute at first. Ha ha, giant talking fast food that are always blowing each other up and saying stupid things that make no sense what-so-ever. Never mind that it's a stereotype of Urban America. Then in Sealab 2021, everybody always back stabs each other or dies at the end. Ok, hilarious...

But now, it's the same joke, same sexual inuendo, same retarded characters in every cartoon that comes out of the Williams Street studio. It's like hearing the same joke told over and over and over and over again. After the 20th time it's not only not funny, it's excruciatingly disturbing.

Here, lets take every Japanese Anime' from Voltron to Starblazers and play them back to back with every spoof of every Hanna-Barbara character (talk about abusing all your licensed properties by the way), and call that a network. But hey, that's what people want to see.

I guess Ted Turner is no longer involved with the workings of Time-Waner cable. This kind of stuff would never run back in the day.

But hey, anything for a buck, right? And now the uncreative promotions and marketing staff at Cartoon network can use my post and make fun of it as a commercial bumper. Have fun...

Watch South Park Wednesday night, that's a creative cartoon that Time-Warner can only dream of ever having!

It was supposd to premier last year. It didn't. With a network run as if baboons were charge, it's hard to know what the truth is with them.

Well -- they did have half of it until a couple of years ago, when they sold their half of Comedy Central to Viacom.

nahhh ill stick with Swim....

Its obvious you don't like it....no doubt there...
I would have probably understood your frustration until I saw that you thought South Park was "creative". I don't share the emotional investment but I think both South Park and the shows you commented on share similiar elements....but ....was curious to see how people liked the shows. Seems strange to praise South Park if they share the same "low brow" appeal.

I did neglect to mention that one. The animation and characters seem appopriate to reflect the satire of that fantastic comic.....I hope it will not disappoint.

Waa! Complaining about adult swim? Please! You can decide what to watch with your remote. I don't like The Golf Channel or HGTV but I don't go around the Internet bitching about it. No one's forcing you to watch adult swim.

I don't like the anime (well, *ANY* anime, period) they show but I do enjoy Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken, and Stroker & Hoop. And I'm eagerly anticipating the premiere of "The Boondocks" on November 6th.
Edited by FilmCritic3000 on 10/19/05 02:55 AM.

And I would not have made any comment on it. But somebody else posted the topic so I responded. So what's the problem, I can't have an opinion on something?

You're right, I can decide not to watch. And thanks to this board, I can also comment on why.

I can understand if told everyone else not to watch it, but I didn't. I simply stated my opinion abot it. Radio Info.com allows me to, DEAL WITH IT !

Some people think their opinion should be the only one. I don't have to like what you like, and I don't have to apologize for it

If this continues, there won't be a Cartoon Network. It be Adult Swim 24/7 until the parental groups attempt and succeed (with the help of government officials)to shut it down. Then it go back to its original 3 hour block.

Personally, I would like them to take off Family Guy and Futurama and only have them on weekends. Then run Space Ghost/Cartoon Planet during their weekday timeslots. I can't believe they put Space Ghost at 12:15AM instead of 10PM. That show started the concept of Adult Swim.

The Venture Brothers was another excellent show, although we've been waiting forever for season two.

I also like Harvey Birdman, but I do notice the extra l o n g reaction shots most of these shows have, which I see as a "padding" mechanism. Some character will say something and then we get five second frozen shots of characters just staring. Show Harvey, show the bird, show the boss, show Harvey again. Fifteen seconds later dialogue resumes. It is probably a way to save some $$$ on the animation but it ruins the flow.

The most amusement comes in watching these characters in a whole new way. Unibooboo, Fred "Soprano" Flintsone, and the way-too-easy Shaggy & Scooby pot bust are all classics, as is the must-see Jetsons episode watching the family attempt to cope with a carpet that just doesn't seem to get them to Harvey's desk.

I think we are all curious to see what they are going to do with this excellent Johnny Quest parody...but did they write themselves in the corner by the actions that led to the Monarch going to Jail or the last episode with the fate of the "boys" in the air at this point. Will Dr. girlfriend be "outed".....eitherway it will be a very funny season 2.

I agree...its mostly cost. Teri gross interviewed the swim project manager and he said they had so little cash to do it that the real fun came to be how to create so much with so little. One example to save money they went to the bumps that are just words posted rather than do animations. This has now become a key trademark for the Swim..but I do enjoy how they reuse the most lame cartoon characters like Ernie Devlin, Apache Chief, and others to make new funnier and sometimes weird characters. and making Peter the Hippo a running gag with the "Didja get that thing i sent ya" is hilarious to me.

I also like the Apache Chief gets laid off and loses his ability to grow "large" episode.

What about the anime?

Im so hooked on full metal alchemist....the animation is decent for anime..but the story is rich. I enjoy the story of how two boys who "exceeded the limits of what should be done" go about the process of redeeming themselves....

Cowboy Bebop was very interesting to follow as well as Inyuasha and Samurari Champloo. since the stories are done in a serial form...its easy to get hooked because you can't watch them indvidually. Im hooked on thoseshows.

On the other hand, some of the Anime is just non-sensical to me in any form.. maybe a lot is lost in the translation.

I have no idea what the point is for the Paranoia Agent, S-Cry-Ed, Bob-bobo-bobo, and others are trying to share. And i don't care enough to find out because the stories didn't seem very interesting to me...for no particular reason.

I have to admit one guilty pleasure, this Super Milk Chan - its nuts, absoulutely nuts...but I love it.

Didn't Doc Venture say at the end something about getting out the clones?

I couldn't disagree more! We love to watch FG, American Dad and Futurama. And, frankly, Cartoon Network is pretty smart because i end up watching Robot Chicken and Harvey Birdman too. Which I never would have done without FG as a lead in.

All that being said, my wife and I were pretty shocked with the promos for "Squidbillies". Especially the one with the two characters who looked like they were *going at it*. Pretty poor taste, even at 10pm.

And, those stupid ads for that new Super Cat Power (or whatever it is) "watch her die, watch her die" drive us insane. Has a middle school art class gotten involved in cartoon making? Horrible! Ugh!

Bring back Tom and Jerry!

Makes perfectly good sense to me. South Park is much more original and entertaining than anything the Williams Street folks have squeezed out. There's depth behind Trey and Matt's shock humor, whereas you really can't say that for the Adult Swim shows.

So, yeah, I'm with Garrett on this one. ATHF, Sealab, Harvey Birdman, etc. are neat the first few times you see them, but then the gimmicks wear out their welcome and you realize "How lame is this? Newgrounds would probably turn it down, for crying out loud." Venture Brothers is amazing, though.

Their anime selections have always been a mixed bag, IMO. FMA and Cowboy Bebop are simply great works of art that everyone should see, but I'm meh on many of the others and simply don't get the continued popularity of Inuyasha at all. It's just way too slow-paced, especially for something airing in this program block.

What if Matt and Mike Chapman had signed on with Cartoon Network in 2000? Would they have ended up behind the H-B parodies and would they have been a few shades less crude and a good deal more entertaining? But they didn't do it at the time because they didn't think their animation skills were good enough and now they're making more money from H*R merchandise than Cartoon Network would pay them.

Young male demo. That's all you need to know. In fact, one of the funniest things about Adult Swim stuff is the thought of channel surfing late middle aged insomniacs flipping around at night and encountering any of the shows using classing Hanna-Barbara characters in Adult Swim and think of their reactions to the "updating" of the classics.

My grandmother nearly had a heart attack when she landed on an Upright Citizens Brigade episode featuring a "fund raiser" for a guy with an erection issue. She really didn't have a clue what she was watching, but she wasn't happy about it. :)

Tom and Jerry? Ick. Itchy & Scratchy was like the Road Runner cartoons to me - same thing over and over. I am not a big fan of a lot of the contorted cartoon characters of today either. They cater to a youth that assumes they are smarter than the rest of us (and aren't) so you get these wiseass cartoons as a result. I'm a far bigger fan of the original Looney Tunes which worked on every level and effectively satired society.

I never found MGM cartoons to be particularly interesting to me. Warner Brothers really had their act together, even more than Disney IMHO.

I really get a kick out of "Robot Chicken". Vintage action figures/toys + stop-motion animation=great viewing. I understand Seth Green & Co. are currently working on season two even as I type this.
______________

Re: What about the anime?

Not to mince words, some of the anime' is good.
Inuyasha is a current, still in production.
Cowboy beebop is classic that has won awards.
As was Big O.

The problem is, if you only show the same type of show, it gets old.
Adult Swim is not the "Anime' network," or the "Bash old Hanna-Barbara cartoons" network.

And don't give them any ideas. Next they'll probably use that as an excuse for a pay channel. But don't get me started on that tangent...
