Adult Top 40? Well............. Yes.

So, is 103.9 now the pop/rock adult top 40 version of Hot 97.5? Are they striving to be the second new music only station playing hits only from 2007-Present with one occasional older mid 00's song thrown in? I mean.. I guess it doesn't matter that the classic pop and alternative were removed because we still have 99.9, 96.9, and 98.7 for those who want to hear 80's and 90's and mid 00's pop rock. Hot 97.5 has a dance lean, and 103.9 has a pop/rock lean. Both are basically chr's though. Interesting.

I'm copyrighting every prediction or armchair quarterback idea I post or verbally say for now on. I think it'll be a nice get rich quick scheme for me! ...Unless, of course, everyone starts doing the opposite of what I say out of spite. ;)

Right, but what about alternative? It seems like you just completely disregarded that format by the time you finished your sentence. To just say it "doesn't matter" reflects a pretty ignorant worldview since you apparently got what you want.

Your average alternative listener is not gonna tune in to ANY of those stations for the once-every-few-hours chance that they'll hear "Even Flow" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (seemingly the only alt. tracks available on "Adult Hits").

Phoenix needs an Alternative station! And I know we've got 106.7, but KWSS-LP doesn't quite fill that whole. In fact, it's often unbearable to listen to.

Damn I think I caught my mistake in my word structure here. I should've clarified what I said. I specifically meant to say classic pop and *classic* alternative (not just alternative) - classic alternative as in the stuff you can hear on other stations... like KMXP, etc. I was not referring to modern alternative or being glad that the prior alternative format itself was gone.

Besides, I wouldn't suggest an alternative format anyway regardless of whether or not I wanted it considering the state that alternative music formats are in today. It's not an argument I can hold up unless I resort to saying "but look at what California is doing" like everyone else.... and everyone knows that being like everyone else is not my style.  ;)

I wouldn't say I got what I wanted, per se, but rather... I got what I suggested. Like I said, we have enough chr's already.

By the way, I can tell who Frequency Breakdown is anyway.  8)
Others may fall for it, but I'm not your typical "I just got punk'd" type of guy!

It seems a number of markets are getting Alternative back. In the past few months, Cleveland and Chicago have gotten theirs back, albeit on weaker signals than previously, and New York just got it back on the frequency it was on prior to the flip. Sure, alternative has gotten MUCH more poppy over the course of 2012, but it is starting to breathe new life into the format.

The sound has been "pushed underground" too much. As I've been stating to the alternative rock fanatics in the chr pop section who are very unhappy with the fact that alternative has fallen off the mainstream radar, the sound is bound to eventually have a huge come back. The current pop sound can only last for so long and rock/alternative (and even pop/rock) is too big of a sound to be kept underground long term.

Although many pop/rock and mainstream alternative bands have watered down their sound big time, notice how it's currently the pop-rock / alternative bands who have been topping off the chr charts lately. I'm just waiting to see who will be the first to have a full out alternative sound and make it to top 40 again and kick off a new wave of alternative hits. I remember the times when you could hear alternative-rockish type material along with other styles of music all mixed up on top 40. Then ever since the 2000's "hip hop takeover," it seems as things have been more limited and trendy on top 40, as everything began to seemingly either swing drastically towards one sound or another while other sounds would almost completely vanish from top 40 then come back.

There is no attack on alternative coming from me here. Part of my reasoning for suggesting an adult top 40 was to embrace that pop/rock top 40 sound that once was a huge norm in the chr world. It was as close to suggesting an alternative as I could get without "going to far." However, I think this whole adult top 40 move took too long to happen, as there are now too many pop leaning chr's in Phoenix for KEXX to be as noticeable and successful as they could be on the type of signal they have.

There is nothing "underground" about Alternative (not any more, that is). It simply has run its course. Grunge (which was nothing close to what Alternative was on KUKQ) was played to death and killed a Genre that was once upbeat and fun. We have KDKB and KUPD for all those who consider Green Day and Pearl Jam "alternative." If you are looking for the real deal, you won't find it on the dial (with the exception of KWSS, but is limited to certain parts of the valley). The word stems from being the "alternative" of mainstream, and most likely NOT on a major label, which is why the term Indie was associated with the format...once upon a time.

Thanks for clearing that up, KDM… But on another note:

I have no idea what you're talking about or who you think I might be. Frankly I'm only a little bit offended that you're jumping to some weird conclusion about someone you don't even know! haha

Commercial Alternative is doing very well in markets around the country right now.

It's doing better this year than last. Becoming a tougher sell as there are becoming less and less male only buys and the format - for the most part - is male dominant.

I respect KROQ a ton and while they are #1 in morning drive like they were in recent ratings, they drop to 12th in middays and afternoons. They lose half of their audience when they start playing music. If the music was that strong, wouldn't they perform a lot better than that?

KBZT just went and starting playing familiar music and are starting to see some growth.

KCXX in Riverside has the best numbers they've seen in years

Yes, there are some good stories right now - but I bet the power ratios on billing aren't that great on a lot of the stations.

But.... are you from New York? Or Phoenix? (market-wise, I mean) ;D
Just askin'

Or maybe I was Punk'd because I don't know anyone in New York who also does the Phoenix section but not the Dance section. I doubt who I thought it was would post in the Phoenix section, BUT... who knows. Maybe I was Punk'd (but that style of being Punk'd doesn't count if it was not a "set up Punk!")

Please don't worry, KDM. I'm not in the punkin' business! Just here to talk shop ;D

And to answer your question, I live in Phoenix but originally hail from the Big Apple area. That would explain my presence on both boards!
