Is there such a thing as Adult top 40 anymore? If so, what is the difference between that format and HOT AC

This is just my opinion, but I'd say the difference between Hot AC and Adult Top 40 would be that Hot AC is a little more gold based. Looking at some playlists:

KSXY- Santa Rosa is listed as a Hot AC... their top songs regularly spin around 72 times a week, more than most Hot ACs. Plus they have a smaller gold library with nothing earlier than the 90s.

KUDD- Salt Lake City too. They are VERY current intesive, and only play about 40 gold tracks.

Hot ACs would dive into the 90s and 80s more.

That's just my view on it though

WSTR/Atlanta "Star 94" was a good example of an Adult Top 40 up until about 5 months ago. They basically took the Top 40 chart and picked out the songs that had an overall musical flavor to them. In other words, they left out anything that remotely sounded like rap. If there was a hip-hop song that was a monster hit on Top 40 (such as Usher's "Yeah"), they would edit the song heavily to remove any parts where the words were rapped instead of sung. Also their recurrents stayed in the rotation a lot longer than a typical Top 40 station. Add in some late 90's Hot AC gold during the day and you've got yourself an Adult Top 40 according to Star 94/Atlanta.

Of course now they would not be a good example of one. In recent months they have gotten a lot harder as competition has heated up in Atlanta. Their main competitor is WWWQ/Atlanta "Q100", whose daytime playlist is a great example of an Adult Top 40.

I always believed that the terms Adult Top 40 and Hot AC were the product of what trades they were in. The former was the term employed by Billboard/Radio Monitor while the later was the term used by Radio and Records. Similiar to the terms Top 40 (Billboard) and CHR (R&R). It is still hard to get a precise definition of a what constitutes a Hot AC. According to R&R, WPST Trenton/Philadelphia is listed as a Hot AC, while Radio-locator classifies it as CHR/POP. Also Radio-locator's Hot AC section lists WFLC Miami as a Hot AC, while most would view it as a heavy gold based rhythmic AC.
