Advertisers Pulling Out of Imus Show

Could they not find a better source to go to than this whacko -

But Jerry Del Colliano, a professor at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, said he believes that any pullback by advertisers will be temporary if at all.

"It's very hard to sustain a boycott. It's temporary at best, history shows us that. This was another case of going too far and Corporate America pushing and encouraging a personality to be over the edge," said Del Colliano.

"This is the usual canned outrage from two corporations who encouraged the behavior in the first place," he said.

That said, I hope he is right about the short term impact. But I disagree with the "canned outrage," the outrage seems real.

University of Southern California Thornton School of Music??? Really this is the best person you could get for a story that is all over the nation. Sounds like someone is cherry picking quotes.

For the info of some not familiar with Jerry Del Colliano, he is a veteran high-profile radio guy. For 27 years, until it was sold to Clear Channel in 2002, he was the publisher of the trade publication "Inside Radio". Prior to that he was a program director and air talent at several major stations in Philadelphia.

In other words, he's been to the beach and carried the bag.

I stand corrected then. However, that reporter should have used the qualifications you did.

An idiotic comment to have made on the part of Imus, but what would anyone expect from a show that caters to a primarily white male audience. I think that when you look at the big picture Imus indeed is serving this audience well. You would tend to listen to him for the crazy remarks that he and the crew make. So it was off color, so maybe it was offensive to some, but I'd be willing to bet it was quite humorous to those who are die hard listeners. Enough is enough, he need not have said he was sorry more than one time. If Reverend Sharpton does not like it too bad, he and his followers can just tune "The I-Man" out. People really need to stop taking every comment that every broadcaster makes so serious. At 6am while driving in the car I want to laugh, and I want to hear stupid comments. Maybe listeners of Imus need to avoid those retailers and companies who pulled their ads from his show.

Careful, Bozzle. You even remotely support Imus and mostb1 is gonna call you a bigot!

That's stupid Radiosaur, seriously just pointless. How about some honesty? most of you arent even that fond of Imus as much as you hate Sharpton for what you feel he stands for. AGAIN, Sharpton is not the point of this at all, its about Imus, what he said, period. YOu want freedom of speech? you have it AS LONG AS YOU ARE READY TO DEAL WITH WHATEVVER FALLOUT THAT COMES OF IT, dont pass the buck onto jess Jackson and Sharpton, Imus blew it, period. Anyone who has worked with Imus knows he's a bigot and that is his right to be, it's none of my business. The problem is that he showed his tru colors on te air, what part of that are you still not understanding?.

Imus will have the biggest audience he has ever had when he returns in two weeks. Advertisers will be breaking down the door to be there because they don't care about morality only big advertising numbers and warm bodies to buy their products or services.
So, those advertisers who leave will be replaced by a dozen more.

This is a copy of an email I just sent to Cindi Bigelow of Bigelow Tea when i heard they had pulled their ads from Imus. I intend to send one to each and every advertiser who pulls there ads and a lot of people I know are doing the same.

Cindi,

after reading your statement regarding the "Imus in
the Morning" show and the pulling of your advertising
I am now informing everyone I know, family friends and
business associates to "NEVER BUY YOUR PRODUCTS
AGAIN!".

I am disgusted by the way you and your company have
reacted and are being used by a fringe element of
society. You have fallen into the trap of letting a
minority opinion that gets blown out of proportion by
the mainstream media decide the livelihood of someone
who has the right of free speech.

Not only that....it not as if you did not know
anything about the Imus show, it sometimes use of
crude humor and the way it pokes fun at anyone and
everything. You have been a sponsor of it and to now
draw attention to yourself and pull your advertising
only shows how much of a hipocrite you and your
company are. You are no better than the race baiting
racist Rev. Al Sharpton.

Good Bye to YOU and Bigelow Tea. Shame on you! I hope
you go out of business.

Proctor & Gamble has pulled all their brands. That includes Gillette and Duracell that they bought last year.

Your comment is about as insensitve as it gets. You need to apologize to the women of Rutgers, too.

Imus isn't sorry for the racist remark that he said, he's just sorry he got caught saying it. It was a racist remark. How much further must we lower the bar in society of racist, sexist so-called humor? Imus has done a great job in ever getting it lower. Pathetically lower. And it's over for him. His show will now have to change forever. He'll be watched like a hawk if he ever returns.

I don't know why everyone thinks it is the Rev. Al Sharpton that started all this. Of course, it's Imus putting his foot in his mouth is what did. But it's the National Association of Black Journalists and a number of bloggers that contacted a number of talk show host, mostly black, and the New York Times that got this out into the mainstream media.

Uncle Bozzle, you need to get back on your meds. I hosted daily talk for several years, and the bulk of the audience was white male--as it almost always is in any kind of topical talk setting. My numbers were strong, and I never once veered into racist territory. And the same is true for many successful talk hosts of various political points of view all over the country. There is also quite a bit of racism on the air, especially in the context of the immigration debate, but my point is that it is by no means a necessary element of a successful show.

One other thing. I've probably now read hundreds of posts suggesting that this was just a bit of comedy or a joke that got out of hand on the Imus show but no one--absolutely no one--has explained why referring to some exemplary young women from Rutgers who had just come close to winning a national basketball title as "hos" is funny.

I'm still waiting......

I am intrigued by some of the wording of these company reps. It sounds like, in some cases, that the spot schedule is being moved to other dayparts on a temporary basis. I did not read (or missed it completely) that the advertisers cancelled their buys.

I did note that one rep said that, and I'm paraphrasing here, the company would evaluate the situation if the fuss dies down.

Interesting.....

I too wrote to Bigelow Tea to tell them I would no longer buy their product.
