Advertising For Interns (WKNR)

This afternoon I heard a "commercial" on WKNR attempting to recruit interns (It might have been 60 seconds). Has anyone heard an "ad" like this on any other major market station? It's kinda like saying to the public, "hey, we don't want to have to pay our staff."

?

At the stations I was at we worked with the local colleges and other schools looking for interns. We never had a shortage of those wanting the positions.

There is no shortage because many kids have delusions of grandeur about working in radio. Nowadays anyone can fire up a podcast, go on a channel that streams video and do their own "show". Radio is becoming less and less relevant on both FM and AM.

Chuck,(VODood) YOUR stations do it.

No they haven't. And especially not in a manner like THIS.

And remember, WKNR is a 50,000 watt (daytime) station. To air ads pleading for interns smacks of desperation on their part. And they've done it before - a spot aired two years ago that extolled the virtues of getting Greg Brinda a cup of coffee (complete with his bellowing voice), or something like that.

Clear Channel stations are airing spots seeking sales people. Not interns. And CBS is actually on a very public hiring drive, for obvious reasons.

And name me a Salem or Radio One station that has ran spots pleading for more interns. Not even the WOBL/WDLW combo has done anything like this.

I forgot you listen to all stations all the time. Of course not actually being employed in radio affords you the opportunity to do this. (has anybody ever seen Nate and Gorman in the same room)

My daughter got an internship at WQMX based on an ad they ran. (this was 2009)

I've heard intern ads on Radio One in cleveland for WENZ. Heard them on Clear Channel stations too. Brian and Joe ran them on WMVX. Might have been Rover, could have been maxwell, but they held interviews on air for interns.

Its okay to be wrong, I was about the FM sports thing.

Not to speak on Nate's behalf, but I'm sure his current line of work, whatever it may be, would probably pay him boatloads more than he would be in radio!

"John" I didn't say stations don't do it. I stated that it wasn't commonplace, meaning uncommon.

No need to say "VODood". Chuck is fine. It's in my signature. Not hiding. ;)

What is the norm is to advertise with colleges, tech schools, etc as interns get college credit and in fact these days must be enrolled in school to be able to intern. Not saying you can't walk in off the street and get an internship. One may be able but it too isn't the norm.

IMHO I'm not a fan of advertising for interns on the air. The websites, fine. But not on air. Why waste an avail? Again, just my opinion.

Real tacky. Says we don't pay our help, and says we're not sold out. 50,000 watt station pimping for free help. Pathetic.

Every station I've heard of has unpaid interns. They work a few months in the station and it adds credit to their college/tech school programs.

However...to advertise for interns on the radio, is kinda small-market-ish. I agree. As others have said: maybe on the employment section of a radio station's website...but, not on-air.

Most stations have developed personal relationships with local colleges/tech schools and let them know by phone/e-mail/meetings that the stations seek interns.
