After last night, do you think that Howie Carr's book....

....has any chance of ever becoming a movie? We already have an ersatz version of "The Brothers Bulger" in movies and on DVD from Warner Bros. (Howie's publisher), and it won Best Picture last night. If Howie did try to make his book into a movie, it'd only be a pale imitation of "The Departed" IMHO.

Let's see what you have to say about this! ;D

There are better books about the subject matter that would make a better Hollywood Movie.

Legends of Winter Hill by Jay Atkinson is a much, much better book. Howie won't have the "competition" on, and Jay doesn't have an afternoon drive time show with a cash register sound to foster book sales.

I just started Legends of Winter Hill, based solely on Joe's recommendation, after finishing up What A Party by Terry MacAulliffe He was right about this.
I haven't read as much of Jay Atkinson's stuff over the years, but judging from the first couple of chapters of this book, I'd like to hear him trading mob stories with Howie.

There are a few persons including my
self grew up in Somerville, knew the group that hung around Pal Joey's on Broadway, and the owner, that have more interesting tidbits.

My daughter's mom in law, her family knew the Bulger's very well, all grew up on South Boston.

The Bulger book could make a great movie though there are a lot of characters to keep track of. Some interesting scenes could include Billy carrying grudges (mad at Dukakis, so got GHW Bush here to
see Boston Harbor and make a statement about mismanagement of the Commonwealth under Dukakis
in election of '88) and the various political connections and the corruption of FBI agents...and the theft
of Stippo Rakes' package store (he and his wife fled to Florida but an anxious Kevin Weeks asked him to
come back to Southie and "stand around on some street corners so people will know we didn't
whack you".
The Herald photographer meeting Whitey in a bar ("I'm Jimmy Bulger and I kill people, motherbleeper"),
the murders of Debra Davis and Debra Hussey, the Anguilos ("he can't be dead! He owes me 13 grand!")
and more. "It comes from the tabloid talk show stuff in Boston..."

Gangster at the So. Boston Liquor Mart to Jack Hynes: "Tell (Howie) we got a dumpster out back
waiting for him. It'll be another Robin Benedict."

Bill Weld at the St. Patty's breakfast: "We've got a bonus for you, you see/ Your winning ticket in the
lottery/You're going to be a millionaire, there is...no..doubt/'Cause I had YER BROTHER pick these
numbers out!"
